Beginning July 1st It Will Be Illegal In Iowa To Dismember A Corpse
<snip>

Bellevue, Ia. - Six years ago, Julie Miller helped her boyfriend dismember their roommate's body, throw the parts in the Mississippi River and bury the head in a bucket of concrete.

Surprisingly, those actions didn't break any state laws. In fact, the former Bellevue woman is in prison only because she lied to investigators and took the victim's belongings, which prompted sentences of three and five years, respectively.

Infuriated by the relatively light sentences, the victim's family has pushed lawmakers to ensure that others like Miller won't get off so easily.

Beginning July 1, a new state law will make it a felony to dismember or hide a body to conceal a crime. The 2001 slaying of Greg May was the impetus for the measure, which was passed by the Legislature this year.

While Miller will likely be released from prison in a few years, her boyfriend, Douglas DeBruin, will spend the rest of his life behind bars for killing May.

May's children were shocked to learn there was no law in Iowa to prohibit what happened to their father's body.

4. Someone here needs to die and
send me their body. It's only a few hours' drive to the Iowa line for me and I'll prop the body up in the front seat.

Once we get there it's party time.

8. I guess for future reference, I'll have to start doing that "Weekend at Bernie's" thing,
as I'll be legally bound to maintain the integrity of the corpse...
