Here is why I thought last nights Sopranos finale SUCKED
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 02:46 PM by LibraLiz1973
That's right, I said it.

Last nights episode was the conclusion to 80+ hours of (mostly) quality TV.
As fans, most of us had stayed faithful to show through it's ups and downs.
Ups being Season 1, The Pine Barrens Episode, Tony's Shooting etc. The downs
being at least year long breaks between seasons, the snooze fest beginning of Season 8
with Vito in Maine, Some of the more lackluster dream sequences, the plot lines
that started but never went anywhere....

Season 8b came back with a vengeance. I know we all had such high hopes for a kick ass ending.
Instead we got NOTHING. Literally. Black screen.

Many argue that last nights ending demonstrated David Chase's brilliance. I find that funny.
What was so brilliant about leaving millions of fans dis-satisfied? What was so brilliant about
getting everyones expectations up with the previous episodes and then not delivering?
I've seen people say that by not supplying and ending, Chase was allowing us to make our own.
I've said it before & I'll say it again... IF I wanted to "create my own ending" I would have
done so long ago. David Chase was PAID to be a writer, and he chose not to write. It was not brilliant, it was embarrassing. If he feels that TV is beneath him in some way,he should have left a long time ago.

People who try to find deeper meaning to the episode make me laugh. It's TV people- not Shakespeare.
He wasn't trying to make a broader statement. He was trying to piss people off by not giving any kind of ending at all. What he did was a disservice to the characters he created and that we were so invested in.

I hope he's happy.

For me the episode tainted the entire series. It ruined what was a good show. I wont buy the DVDs or tell other people to watch because THERE IS NO POINT.

1. The point was to make you think.
I for one appreciate not being spoon fed a trumped up ending. I also appreciate that he chose not to take it down in a blaze of violent last minute killings. That resolves nothing, and I think that was a bit of his point. Or maybe Tony was killed, and that resolved everything, and that's the point. You decide - at least take the time to think about it. It's the difference between the art of allegory and soap opera crap television - the difference between the Sopranos and Dallas. It was always about intelligent story telling from the very first episode. There was always room for looking deeper into the story, and being able to draw some of your own conclusions. That's why I loved the show. Chase owes us nothing, and I'm glad that he took it in the direction that he did. Bravo!

3. I loved it, too.
The ending really made me think. Was that guy going to come out of the bathroom and kill Tony? Was AJ going to revert back to being a spoiled little brat who didn't give a shit about anyone but himself? What kind of lawyer would Meadow be? The list goes on.

I like the ending. Real life doesn't come to a conclusion in a neat, tidy package and neither did this show.

Two thumbs up!

4. I admit, I SCREAMED at my TV and HATED it at first.
But, after digesting and thinking, I love it. I keep referring to it as emotionally frustrating but intellectually gratifying.

17. But the show IS NOT (nor has it ever been) REAL life
It wasn't a "reality" show. It was a TV drama.

No matter what the ending questions would have been there.
The no ending ending was a tacky rip off.

23. Why does it have to end in a neat, tidy package?
How could they have done it?

I've been a Sopranos' fan since day one...I realize that this isn't a reality show. I just don't understand why everyone feels that they deserve closure.

22. nope - I am with you
I was caught off guard. But as it built up I could feel myself totally involved.

And the fact that he took it 5 minutes longer - a very minor thing. But I was watching the clock knowing whatever was going to happen had to be done by 10:00. And then it kept going.

And everyone can go away knowing that they had the ending figured out. No one was wrong.

A GREAT finale.

11. I love all these closet critics...
If you're not happy then write your own script, take it it Hollywood, and get it produced YOUR WAY.
It's David Chase's show and he can do what he wants. Don't whine to me that's it's not what you expect. If you don't like it or find parts of it boring then DON'T WATCH!

7.  I loved it. Its called reality.

The series was a period of this man's life. The show drops in at his first visit to Dr. Melfi and the show drops out with Tony eating onion rings with his family seven years later.

Tony "existed" before the show and his life "goes on" now that the show has ended.

10. It was brilliant. Black screen, no music...David Chase "killed" the viewers.
I loved it.

How did I ever justify my fascination with these thugs and criminals in the first place? It was the risk I took for joining "La Famiglia". And I must say, my demise was poetic -- to say the least.

21. Oh I didn't think of that. That's a good insight. Anyway I liked the ending.
Even if I did get whacked in my own home by one of Tony's bad boys. :)

25. I wouldn't say Chase feels TV is beneath him
or that the show was a complete embarrassment. But it was very disappointing. IMHO it was a cop out because the writer didn't really want the series to end or a marketing ploy for a movie deal. Either way I mostly agree with you, it sucked.

I thought the ending was outstanding.
