I'm not a particular idiot, but I can't seem to figure out how to get PayPal to work for me. What I see on PayPal seems to support preset, pre-defined sales of specific items categorized in advance. What I need is a more fluid, ad hoc structure allowing the customer to pay a variable amount for a customized, per-order item.
Can someone give me any pointers to this effect? Perhaps it's a lot simpler than I'm thinking, but I can't seem to find the right "Buy it now" button on PayPay.com.
Thanks!

Because I really want to tap into the vast, cerebral resources of the DU Lounge.

Well I'm certainly no PayPal expert, but if you are a relative novice to PayPal, I may be able to help you slightly.
I have simply sent money to friends and family having a PayPal address by clicking the "send money" tab. If you are a low to medium volume seller, perhaps you may simply be able to provide your PayPal address to your customers...and instruct them to click the "send money" tab. They would then just type in your PayPal address and choose what the money is for under the drop down box (ie: Goods - other). There is then a field for them to type in anything appropriate under the "notes" heading...perhaps they could type in an invoice number or an item description.
If you need to go further than this, I would suggest exploring the "Merchant Tools" or "Auction Tools" tabs. I'm sure they have some kind of template set-up that would suit your needs.
Good Luck.
