I have a question about the "5 second" rule

Does it also apply outside or is it an inside rule only?

Cheers

and it does not apply outdoors.

2. for me...
it only applies to dry/non-sticky foods inside the house, but I think everyone has their own spin on the 5 second rule

7. True

I will have you know that this rule is completely unknown in Sweden, I have been trying to spread the word but I think it might only be an American thing.

Definitely only dry foods....

Cheers

3. Generally I apply it inside only
Edited on Tue Jun-12-07 09:40 PM by Hippo_Tron
And it generally has to be worth it, like it can't be a cookie where I can just get another one out of the box. I know I used to use it a lot, but I haven't recently for some reason. I think watching everyone get sick has made me extra cautious.

15. Depends on how good and how big the cookie is
If it's from a box, probably yes. If it's a really good homemade cookie, I generally can't bring myself to throw it away.

11. there was a mythbustes about this one.
iirc, it really had to do with the gooeyness of the food. dry type stuff didn't really pick up much.
but hell, i hate to tell you all, but i worked at some fancy restaurants, and there was no time limit. if it looked ok, it went out.

13. Only you can decide what you are comfortable with.
Personally, I think it depends on the location. I know how clean or not clean MY floors are, but not anyone else's.

Well...wait...my good friend K keeps her floors so clean, I could probably get away with the 10-second rule at her house.

16. A few months ago my dog ate a month old burrito that fell under my bed.
I had forgotten about it. Meat, cheese, and sour cream. He gobbled the thing up. It didn't bother him at all. Sure, he licks his ass for fun. But, one second or ten, the nasties will stick as soon as it hits the ground.

....but you are going to have to explain. How exactly did the burrito fall under your bed? Were you eating under your bed or did it fall and roll, thus spreading the cheese and sour cream along your floor?

Cheers

37. My bed is about 8 inches away from my wall...
I had a plate with a half eaten burrito sitting on the edge near the wall.. Yadda, Yadda. If this bed is rockin' the burrito is droppin'. I forgot about it until I caught the dog under my bed. The dog never goes in my room. I forgot to close the door when I went to the bathroom one night. He snuck in and was eating something under my bed.. I assume it was the incredibly old burrito. Or old socks..

...some cats are attracted to vinegar like catnip. I had one that would eat green olives and roll on them same as catnip. When he was done, he would sleep it off.

44. That must explain it. As it is now, I keep the catnip well "hidden" in a cast iron kettle.
And the cats treat it like a kitten does when momma cat roles over for feeding. It's very amusing to watch their love affair with the black kettle.

45. The Baltimore Sun
a couple of weeks ago reported that a couple of grad students tested the rule in a scientific study. I can't find the link, but basically, they tested various foods for bacteria by dropping them on the floor of the school cafeteria. They found that wet foods can be on the floor for up to 30 seconds and dry foods for a minute, although some dry foods could go up to 5 minutes (Skittles being the one I remember) without picking up any bacteria.

47. who cares about bacteria? it's the fuzz and pet hair
which leads to my other thought on this topic - gooey foods are ok IF the goo is a thick layer that can be skimmed to remove the entire area that made contact

49. This is where I was going to weigh in
My friends were talking about this a couple of weeks ago, they must have seen the story. If it's a hard item and doesn't get the fuzz and hair stuck to it, I'm not that scared of germs. Once I went to lunch witha friend and we both got a cookie for dessert. On the way out I dropped my white chocolate macadamia nut wonder in the parking lot and, yes, in 5 seconds I reclaimed my cookie. I thought my friend was going to die laughing, I don't think she would have done it, and certainly not in front of anybody. Brave or fool hearty, who is to say? I lived to tell the tale.
