I'm scared.
The beauty of the internet is that you can express your fears to complete strangers.

I'm scared shitless...I am a six injection a day diabetic, and my freaking weight has gone up 10 pounds in 48 hours. I have been feeling like I am going to die...seriously.

I can't wait for a few hours to pass so i can get my ass to the doc.

No sympathy responses please...just needed to vent a little. :scared:

1. sorry to hear that...
what causes such rapid weight-gain?

Is your blood sugar staying within acceptable ranges?

4. Thanks MonkeyFunk...
Thank you.

Yes, the levels have not been horrible.

The weight gain is related to my kidneys and water retention. Something is most likely going on with my kidneys. They spill protein occasionally, and I have had unexplained kidney bleeding sporadically for years. Millions of tests and even a few exploratory scopes and they still can't figure out what's going on.

I want to be a doctor. "Well Philboy, I have no fucking idea what is wrong. $200 please. Have a nice day".

6. I Can Answer a Lot of NON-DIAGNOSTIC Kidney Questions
As I mentioned, I'm a kidney patient and I'm pretty knowledgeable. I can answer a lot of questions - without giving medical advice or a worthless internet diagnosis - about proteinuria, hematuria, diabetic nephropathy, edema and other things.

2. Venting is Cool
If you have pitting edema, you may want to either call your provider's triage nurse or ther on-call number for your doctor. This is not medical advice - this is just urging you to maybe get medical advice a little quicker!

(T2 with non-diabetic kidney failure here)

9. Hey There Now!
I'm not looking for sympathy - just mentioned my stuff to let you know I'm not talking out my ass any more than usual!

But really - no matter what, being scared is a good enough reason to either call triage or the on-call number NOW. Got my fingers crossed for you that you're having one of those annoying but not dangerous diabetic crapfests (and that it's over soon).

12. Oh dear. I'm sorry to hear this.
I guess I would be scared too. I hope you can get in to see someone, or at least talk to a medical person on the phone, as soon as possible.

I know diabetes is a very serious illness.

19. I seem to be Sleepless in Seattle right now. Almost 4:00 am and I'm
still up, even though I'm very tired. Danged allergies.

F the person who called you back. IMHO, if you are going to take a job where you need to be on call at times, then suck it up and do your job in a pleasant manner.

MrSG had nasal surgery several years ago. His first night, he was really having a hard time. I called the on-call doc who, when he called me back, was an absolute arsehole. Based on the background noise, I think he was at a cocktail party. Boohoo, doc. You want the monies, you do the time AND be nice about it.

Hope things get resolved for you very soon.

21. But On The Bright Side (I'm Famously Annoying For This)
Provided his doctor is any sort of professional - if she's okay with waiting until the office opens instead of sending him to the ER, maybe Phil has reason to be a little less scared (and maybe can focus on being pissed off instead of scared - feeling like crap and being scared sucks the big spleen).

23. Agreed. I'd rather be pissed than scared.
At least in the pissed-off mode, I seem to get more done.

Fear can paralyze a person.

13. I hope you're ok.
If you're this concerned, I'm guessing your urine output is pretty low right now. No advice, but I hope the outcome is good here (at least solvable for now).

thats the funny part....extremely high urine output with normal blood sugar :wtf: , along with rapid weight gain....:wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

I know they frown upon medical discussions, so I will stop there.

We'll see what the doc says.

Hope you are well today.

Phil do you mind me asking your age and what type you have. My little boy has type1(dx 2yrs ago) and the reality of it is just now starting to hit me. I know with all the new meds the prognosis is good, but it still sucks!!

26. .......
I am 48, type 2, diagnosed 1995. Now, let me try to reassure you...your son will be OK.

Yes, it does suck, big time.

But this is the whole key...

Help your son stay on top of it. It is not a death sentence, and if he does what he should, he will have a full and happy life. MONITOR, MONITOR, MONITOR......AND EDUCATE YOURSELF.

Reassure him, and help him cope....a good support network is absolutely essential.

Follow a diet plan rigorously. Have regular physicals. Help him maintain good emotional health. Stress that his diabetes is PART OF HIM...just like his stomach or his teeth, and he must take care of his diabetes just as he would take care of any other part of him.

Now, if I could follow my own advice, I would be fine. I was stricken with debilitating major depression in 2000 because I just about worked myself to death. Also , I developed kidney problems at the same time. I will say this....diabetes and depression are probably the 2 worse things to have at the same time because they feed off each other, and the depression makes the diabetes very very difficult to manage. That is why it is ultra important that your son maintains his emotional health.

Feel free to PM me anytime if you wish.

Best of luck to you and your son, and don't worry. :D

31. Depression is Very Common With Diabetes; They May Be Related
You probably did work your self near death, but you didn't cause your depression, which is an illness, just like diabetes (I know you know this - just a reminder). Depression is very common in diabetics and there is research suggesting a link. Don't beat yourself up - both illnesses are hard to manage, and as long as you're working at it, you haven't failed!

34. Doc says that...
my depression is related to vascular issues from the diabetes (He did scans and all that).

I had a period of about three years in the early 1990's where I would often work 120 hours weeks. I have worked 50 hours straight without sleep. It seems that was the point where things started turning south.

37. Being Death-Warmed-Over Not Helpful With Any Illness
Ya douchebag  But see - a real, live medical professional agrees with me: you didn't cause your depression, though you made it a hell of a lot harder to deal with by working those insane hours.

I have to get around to getting another at some point. Slight change in meds has allowed a bit better sleep, though.

29. I have a CPAP....
I wear it every night. It looks lovely. It's very sexy. it makes me look like Darth Vader. In fact, I told the sleep doc....I says...."Hey Doc!! I'm having too much sex!". He says...."OK Philboy!! let me give you this here CPAP machine!! Wear this, and you will never get laid again!"

Yup, Sleep Apnea, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Kidney problems, depression. Look up the term "walking douchebag" in the dictionary, and you will see my picture.

Oh well, at least I still have my looks, and we all know that looking good is better than feeling good.
