Admit it - the guy can't sing with a shit - it's basically a cross between a dog yowling and mumbling.

But he's still got some great guitar and songwriting skills!

1. You have to listen to some of his old stuff.
He could sing.

2. Right now I have the Traveling Wilburys on the player
Jeff Lynne could sing.

And Tom Petty sings like Bob Dylan if you could understand what Bob Dylan was singing.

But Dylan is an amazing talent

9. He's fine--there are much worse singers
Jeff Lynne writes some catchy tunes and can hit all the notes, but his voice doesn't have the kind of personality I like. John Lennon was horribly nasal and patchy in technical terms as a singer, but I still love his voice.

10. I can't listen to him. I love his songs, but I have to hear someone else singing them.
To me he sounds like a cow giving birth. I think he ruined his entire career by trying to sing his songs himself.

15. It's not so much technical ability, but more style that distinguishes
a good singer. Some have likened Dylans singing to that of a frog croaking, but it's the way he croaks that makes him good. Actually, when you think about it, there are very few, "good" singers in rock and pop music. Style is everything...

16. He could sing, when he wasn't imitating Woody Guthrie.
Listen to "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" or "Lay Lady Lay" to get an idea of what he really sounds like singing.

I read that when Guthrie was dying, Dylan visited him in the hospital and played some of his songs. Instead of singing like he does normally, he sang the way he thought Guthrie would sing them. Guthrie didn't like the lyrics but loved Dylan's singing.

Hence, Dylan's awful singing voice was just a way to impress Woody Guthrie, and it worked so well he kept it.
