53. annoying to some, perhaps...but the music is damn good...
i personally find his singing rather amazing...it's admittedly weird sounding, but he hits all the right notes with great a expressive quality...I'm especially partial to his CD "Fair and Square," cranked up really, really loud.

Great musician and songwriter, but he was smart not to have sung in 'The Band' days.

Someone else nominated Joe Strummer below, which is the same sort of thing. I don't look to Strummer or Dylan for technically perfect vocal delivery. I look to them for something a lot more important.

84. The problem with the Traveling Wilburys was that the voices did not blend
They were all so distinctive on their own that there was no such thing as backup harmonies - it always sounded to me like 5 lead singers who just happened to be recorded singing the same song.

That's my take.

103. Then I'd suggest that live album went through heavy editing
This isn't just a matter of aesthetics. The dude had no voice. He delivered most of his lines in a sort of croaking half-spoken sing-song manner that was, to be as gentle as possible, tuneless. Of course, this was just one particular concert. Maybe he was sick or something.

79. OMG, I lived in a duplex years back, and the neighbor in the other half
played the live version of 'Round Here at least 4 times an hour, all day and half of the night cranked up to eleven. Even when I asked her to turn it down, it still went through the walls. If there's any song by any band that I now absolutely HATE it's that one. I wasn't a fan in the first place, but at least was neutral in my dislike of them before living there. Years later, I still cannot hear that horrid song without wanting to choke myself into passing out.

45. Tim Armstrong from Rancid.
The way he slurs his vocals is annoying as hell. Take Paul Simonon's vocals from "Guns Of Brixton" and, now make him too lazy to finish words, and you've got Armstrong.

47. yes, but his lyrics are often so good that it's ok - quite poetic at times!
his voice sounds more like an attempt to be Joe Strummer, to me....

I always thought that slurring was some kind of suburban punk illness...

How did we get to 75 replies without the low-hanging fruit getting knocked off the tree? He has a great band, they make great music - and he ruins it every time he opens his fucking mouth. The fact that he became a multimillionaire as a singer is proof that commercial success requires massive suckage.

83. I hate that whole style for the most part
the "I have to poop really, really badly" singer, and also the "I've got a c__k in my mouth and I mumble" - which often go hand in hand. What's funny is, there are singers who do it well - Eddy Vedder doesn't bother me - but it's far too common and usually horrible and lazy. Like Creed.

"Weh ahs 'ide o-ehan!"

What, Scott? I can't understand you.

goes into the studio, and records his frustrated grunts and packages it as music.

85. Eddie Vedder and Stevie Nicks
Eddie's voice just grates on my nerves, especially his unfortunate remake of the regrettable joke of a song "Last Kiss"...one oldie that I could go the rest of my life never hearing again. Stevie Nicks sounds like a sheep with pitch definition. Ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a!

I'll second Gwen Stefani as well...all the voices on that awful Hollaback Girl sound like ostensibly human heads with nothing inside them whatsoever. Reminds me of Zappa's line from Valley Girl...

"On Ventura, there she goes
She just bought some bitchen clothes
Tosses her head and flits her hair
She's got a whole bunch o' nothin' in there"

And someone needs to tell her that "Cool" isn't. It's mind-numblingly stupid, in fact. My band was covering that for a while...it seems to have mercifully disappeared from the setlist. Now if "Goodbye To You" would die a similar setlist death...

I don't mind Dave Mathews when he is singing other material like long black veil with Emmylou comes to mind but his music I don't like most of his music. Some of it is really good in phrases (very melodic) but then it goes south quickly.
I think Dave mathews and Bruce Hornsby are really the same person. He is Dave Mathews when he is shit faced drunk then becomes the soulless Bruce Hornsby when sober.

140. The interchangable nu metal knobs
You know the type.

next time I have dry heaves, I'll make sure to add a backing track with one chord low-tuned guitars. It will probably get me a spot opening for Disturbed.

145. John Bell from Widespread Panic
The band is otherwise excellent - they write good tunes, they do amazing jams, but that singer - always off key. It bugs me.

174. In an amorous moment my wife put on a CD with
Edith on it and that was the end of the session. That which was high was laid low, no pun intended. Still disturbs me to think about it. There, bacause you didn't want to know.

167. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and a 1980s J-Pop star named Kyoko Koizumi
Judging from the reaction of the TV studio audiences, she drove teenage boys mad with lust, but I thought her voice was small and often off-key

I know he's super-cool and I totally respect him for singing Hallelujah but everything he does sounds so nasally to me it's annoying. I like him though, I mean he's talented and stuff. And I love Martha's voice.
