What was the best car you ever owned?
Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 12:47 PM by Joe Fields
Not necessarily the most expensive or one that had the most options.

My favorite car of all time, was a 1964 1/2 Ford Falcon Futura. Had a six cylinder engine that ran forever. Wing vents(who needed air conditioning with those?). I drove all over the country with it. Had it for four years, and finally rolled it a couple of times. It was built like a tank. When I rolled it, not one pane of glass cracked or shattered. Miss that car...:toast:

18. I love my Gary Fisher, too.
I toss it on my roof rack, drive fifty miles, and ride it for 20 minutes. It's good for the environment.

Okay, not true. I just don't get to ride it as much as I wish. Hard to pick up two kids from school on a mountain bike.

28. My God that's irresponsible
Roof racks screw up the aerodynamics of the car, get a rear-mounted rack instead :)

My town's best and only bike trail is two miles from my house so it's easier to ride to than it is to put the bike on a car.

There is a trail along the New River in Virginia that I'll drive 150 miles round trip to play on though

32. Spoiler
My stinkin' car has a huge spoiler on the back--I bought it out of charity, long story...

In my old apartment I had a great road route planned out. I've got a Burley trailercycle I take my eight year old daughter along on, so lots of fun. My new apartment is on a popular highway that's just scary to ride with a kid, so we can't just jump on the bikes anymore. Hence, roof rack.

2. I had a '66 Falcon wagon in the '90s
Loved that car. It would go anywhere in any weather and the engine had about 7 movable parts so it was easy to work on.

I think the best car I ever had though was an '85 (I think) Nissan Maxima Wagon, a diesel. It didn't act like a diesel, or sound like a diesel - it had all kinds of get up and go, it was really comfortable and I never had a problem with it. My husband at the time eventually totalled it which really ticked me off. :grr:

4. '79 Toyota corolla
I had it for about 8 or 9 years. I think I changed the oil in it about 3 times. It was a great car, I gave it to an ex and she sold it. I saw it in the parking lot of a plant in '97, that was the last time I saw it and it wouldn't surprise me if it was still around somewhere. The one I have now I bought in '98 or '99 is doing well too, the body is starting to show age but, fingers crossed, it is running really well.

7. some $350 dollar road bike i bought in the early 90s.
high pressure skinny tires, cables wrapped under the tape, upgraded drivetrain, two waterbottles, it was the only consumer item i actually loved. sometimes i slept with it or with it nearby.

i never had a flat on it while riding. and i would routinely do 30-50 mile rides on weekdays and upwards of 100 on weekends.

it was the most beautiful sounding black bicycle god himself created.

11. I still own it
It's a 1995 Lincoln Mark VIII. I bought it used about 4 years ago with right at 100k miles on it. I replaced the original air suspension with an aftermarket coil spring setup and have driven it ever since. So far have had to replace water pump, fuel pump, belt and tires. I have gotten more miles per buck spent out of the old girl than any car I have ever owned so far. :applause:

30. I had a 99 Grand Caravan ES
Same van, basically. That thing was fun. We drove it everywhere, took it down dirt roads that weren't fit for dune buggies, drove it from Austin to Las Vegas, and from Austin to Disney World, and a lot of trips to Albuquerque. I once wound up on a back mountain road that was supposed to be closed in that van, sliding downhill for seven miles on road so covered in snow that we literally almost hit a snowmobile (who was very unhappy to see us, I might add). I've never been less sure that I would survive in my life!

I loved that van. Men aren't supposed to love minivans, but I shed a tear when I sold it.

:) It was the first new car I ever bought, and it was the stripped-down, no-frills base model (which is what I could afford at the time). I bought it in late 1987, and it forced me to learn to drive a five-speed. That was the most fun car to drive! :) It had a lot of pickup and was very quick and agile. The only reason I don't still have it is that a little old lady ran a stop sign in 1991 and totalled it.

Highly-corroded 1965 Mustang that I bought in 1972 for $125. Drove it back and forth to college and around college.

Every time something broke, the replacement part cost $10.

Hard to keep on the road is an understatement. I've never driven any other car that scared me as much. Once it hit about 140, it would use both lanes. In factory condition and 10 inch slicks it went 12.25 through the quarter. Nobody calls them slicks anymore, I'm showing my age.

43. 1987 Buick Grand National
This is the GnX version:

Out of the box, this was a 14 second flat 1/4 mile car. It was also comfy, had a big trunk and was reliable. I modded mine pretty well, but nothing crazy (no nitrous, didn't crack the turbo open).

Mine saved my life when an errant cabrio turned in front of me. I plowed into her and then into a concrete power pole, which didn't budge at all, btw. The front end was completely vaporized. I walked away without injury.

I love my Mazda now, but the GN was the most fun I've ever bought.

It was a fix and repair daily kind of car but I loved it. My parents donated it to charity while I was in the service without my knowledge or consent. Boy, was I pissed!

It was the same color as this one, but in a lot worse shape. Would have, could have, should have...

My experience with the car ended thirty-seven years ago. I posted a Google picture of a '52 MG and and I haven't a clue about TD, TF, etc. Mine had very rusty wire spoke wheels, but I also had a set of stamped rims without tires. I purchased the car from a guy who worked and played with it extensively so I really don't know what I had. All I can say with any certainty, it was a 1952 MG and I enjoyed playing with it until the day I got drafted.

It had the trunk wing and white pin stripes down each side.

The inside was black and red. (I went to UGA and those are our school colors.)

It was a super handling car and it went 140 MPH!

Downside: You could watch the gas guage move as you drove around. I couldn't afford to drive it today if I still had it.

I miss that car and wish I'd never sold it :(

72. Definitely made for the back-road boogy
We'd drive it it to places cars should not be. Set up camp and have a blast. The car was so heavy and powerful it would almost climb a tree :D

61. My 1981 Honda Civic wagon
Lasted 18 years, was comfortable to drive, had good mileage and acceleration (it was a stick shift), held up well looks-wise, other than a recurring rust bubble on the back hatch, which I was willing to forgive.

My 2006 Accord is my second favorite.... ;->

It looked like this, only it was that weird shit-brown color that Mopar used to like in the early '70's.

Still, that car was a FAST mama-jama.

(the above is just for illustration - mine was brand-new, and gold color)

It's the only car I ever bought new. It still had the new-car smell when I totalled it  .

It was great. Small, but roomy in the inside, got about 50 mpg highway, but still had plenty of pep.

Made by Suzuki, which has been the leader in building innovative, fuel-efficient and roomy microcars in Japan.

My present microvan is actually a Suzuki Every, even though it was sold with a Mazda nameplate.

71. 1964 Ford Wagon...
Bare bones: a 289 with three on the tree.

This was the ultimate Beach Wagon. You could cram a pack of children
and boogie boards and coolers and straw bags and beach towels in it and make
your whole day at the beach.

It was blue and I made custom curtains for the back windows. You could just feel the
fun vibes in that car.

Not this one, but just as this one:

It has 200K miles on it and keeps earning money. Just last week, someone ran into it and we're going to be $1800 richer.

76. Our 1963 Chevy Nova SS...
with the addition of sway-bars front and rear and custom made triple leaf springs to lift it about 2" in the rear. That car was fun to drive!...until the wife 180*'d it into one of those emergency phone-box poles (black ice). Now it is sitting in the in-laws car-barn up Oregon way.
