I was disappointed in Knocked Up
the drug bits had funny moments, but way less funny than Cheech and Chong did them thirty years ago

the relationship comedy was okay, but not as good as a few hundred other better romantic comedies

there was basically zero chemistry between the two leads

I laughed a few times, but I really don't see what all the glowing reviews were about . . .

1. That's what I've heard too.
I've heard it has a few moderately funny parts but the rest is kind of lame. My friend said "It's a turd that marketing and reviewers have shined up."

4. me too
"R" rated used to mean some boobs were showing, maybe. Now it means going at it full bore, which used to be rated "X." I do not understand why new movies have to be so degrading on sex and why it has to be so graphic and the source of all humor anymore. It could have been a good show, a really cute show.

14. the humor was about 90% sophomoric drugs and sex jokes
and about 10% based on class and gender stereotypes

we missed the show by 15 minutes or so

it wasn't really a "plan."

:hi: I hope you're feeling better about things . . .

6. Seeing the effects of relative quality perhaps?
A halfway decent movie gets good reviews and box office because there's so much crap out there, rspecially in the comedy/relationship genre.

26. I loved "Waitress," but my 38 year old daughter and her husband hated it.

Go figure...

She's seeing "Knocked Up" tonight.

If she hates it, I'm never going to recommend a movie again.

10. it got excellent reviews
at least the ones I saw

it got a very high rating on rotten tomatoes

I read some glowing comments on this and other forums

but I give it 2 grudging stars out of 5

it didn't suck exactly, but it was nowhere near as good as the reviews. About 15 minutes in, I just sat there thinking WTF?

11. a little clue for future reference
the trailer takes the best two minutes of an entire movie and pushes them all together, if even the trailer is stupid and uninteresting, this means there is not even 2 minutes of a movie worth seeing

is there anything about the premise of this film that is even remotely interesting or funny? two losers have a one night stand and we've got to pretend that the female loser has never heard of abortion or the morning after pill to make the plot work yet she is somehow not a loser? mmmm, nah

some ideas just don't intrigue from the get-go

13. Seems a little harsh characterization of the characters
The female lead isn't a loser, as she was just promoted to on-air at E!, which I have a hard time believing is an easy job to get.

She thought he was using a condom, and very drunk so she didn't think there was a need for the morning after pill.

Abortion is brought up by her mother, but if she went that route it would be about a 30 minute movie.

22. hmm.
I don't know anyone (IRL) who "loved it." Like me, most liked it mildly, but wondered what the reviews were all about.

Watch a Cheech and Chong DVD and an old Cary Grant romantic comedy or The Thin Man or something and it will be a better use of your time.

Just because I'm apparently not clear on what makes one a loser.

29. I liked what Seth Rogen (the star)
had to say about Katherine Heigl being the female lead.

"We actually lose a lot of people right away because they can't believe someone who looked like her would actually have sex with me. They have an easier time believing a guy can shoot spider webs out of his wrists."

I think he is one of the funniest people in movies now. The stuff from 40 Year Old Virgin with him and Paul Rudd was golden. I can't wait for the extra stuff from this movie since they have a lot more interaction.

30. I thought Seth Rogen was terrific. Absolutely first rate.
I should have mentioned before now how much I liked his performance. If not for him, the movie would have truly sucked. I still didn't get any "chemistry" between him and whatserface though.

He was a bit like Albert Brooks, but better. He and Harold Ramis as son and father were really good.

32. If you liked him
you should check out the movie he wrote coming out later this summer, Superbad.

He is in a smaller part in this one though. But still it has some pretty good young talent in it.

Both trailers are pretty good, but I love the redband trailer.

17. I found a few bits pretty funny
nothing I'd call "hilarious" though, except maybe the scene in which she calls him to set up a "date" to tell him she's preggers and he thinks it's because she wants more sex and he and all his roommates go into a faux porn movie pantomime frenzy.

the drug jokes were all just recycled Cheech and Chong fare, but way less funny. The gender jokes were so stereotypical that I didn't find any of them at all funny. The plot was so predictable, I actually timed the plot milestones--hookup, lookup, meetup, get it up, breakup, re-up . . .

I felt like the script had an undercurrent of extreme disrespect for all the characters except Ben. The people were so shallow and self-involved . . .

I don't think it was a rip-off. I found it mildly humorous at points.

I could probably watch that one about 50 times and still find new hilarious stuff.

Stranger Than Fiction (last year) was a terrific dry little comedy, I thought.

33. A lot of it has to do with expectations
If you expect it to be 5 stars and its 3 1/2 stars, it seems disappointing

If you expect it to be 1 and 1/2 stars (like I did) and its 3 1/2, it seems fantastic.

I thought it was definitely 3 1/2 stars and the minor characters steal the show (the roomies, the sister, the kids, and the E! execs.

35. it was humorous
the E! execs were pretty funny. The roomies were okay, but really just recycled Cheech and Chong, the sister was a self-absorbed word-we-can't-say-at-DU, the kids were pretty typical sitcom or movie kids. The birth sequence was good.

36. Judd Apatow is a great talent
I loved his past work (Freaks and Geeks, 40-year-old Virgin). And what do all those things have in common? Seth Rogen! He was my favorite character on Freaks and Geeks and I think he's terrific. I would say I liked the movie well enough, but I have to admit to feeling a little let down after all the hype that's been out there. I had a hard time believing Heigl's character (who is not anything close to a loser, where did that come from?) would want anything to do with Rogen's character. He is sophomoric, crude and lazy. But Rogen does give him a certain charm. It became quite sweet at the end with all the friends at the hospital being just as nervous and giddy as the prospective dad. I thought there were several hilarious scenes, although not as funny as 40-year-old virgin. I love Cheech and Chong but you can't compare that to this kind of film. It's apples and oranges. Completely different feel and purpose.
