The Big Chill II
All we lacked was a funeral. Mrs/Dr DemoTex had her closest undergrad college roomies and friends up in the mountains for the weekend. The mountain house rocked with James Taylor, The Atlanta Tams, and Bach. I cooked non-stop. Dozens of eggs, pounds of bacon and country ham, grits galore, fruit, bread, chickens on the grill (oh!, what a treat!) , spaghetti, turkey sammiches, gallons of Café Bustelo coffee, etc., etc.

Everyone had old-folks fun (tea, food, spot-o-wine, dominoes, and maybe a sly shot of Metamucil), along with hard hikes behind Drill-Sgt. DemoTex. Actually the dogs, Sirius and Nick-the-Quick set the pace on the hikes. We had two straight couples and one gay (Lesbian) couple. All were from Atlanta, where my brother has been in the news in an unfortunate public outing (AJC). The support was great.

The house is quiet now. Kind of sad. I’m alone with the dogs. Driving to Dallas tomorrow.

Mac

4. Oh-Oh! The BEST part?
All were liberal Democrats. One's 86 year-old mother we call Red-Eleanor. One that did not come is from Iowa. She was too involved with the caucuses there (she is a Kerry supporter) to join us.

As the fire roared at night and we sipped port or tea, the discussion always turned to literature. Our common love. How lucky I am for the woman who brought me these friends.
