For me, it's Johnny Cash!

Not only because of his music, which I absolutely love.

But also because he is tied so closely in my mind with my dad. He died when I was 21 (30 years ago), but also because dad was a BIG Johnny Cash fan. My family had a "garage band" of our own. Dad on guitar, me on violin, one sister on flute, brother on drums, another brother on guitar (baby sis was too young), and my uncle and cousins would come over to jam with us. Country, rock 'n roll, you name it, we tried it.

So, what say you? Who is your favorite, if you have one?

34. I spent toooo much time just now listening to him
I think you are right...he does sorta feel like the guy one would want over for morning coffee or an evening watchin TV...just a regular guy and it comes out in his music. I think he is brilliant from what little I have heard. Thanks for turning me on to him. The girl singing with him...well that combo did not work so well for me...he had a guitarist accompanying him in a couple of those who I liked real well though.

I was off to bed eons ago and got roped into this by SeattleGirl...not complaining just sleepy. I enjoy many kinds of music, from Petula Clark to Gwen Steffani, from Juli London to some things most sane folks would cringe at...(trust me "cringe" is putting it mildly)...TALENT is the common thread here, you have turned me onto another talented musician...one I like with what little I have already heard. Thank you Inchworm and G'night.

66. John Prine, as they say in Compton, is the Shiznitz!
By far, hands down, bar none, the best American song writer I can think of. IMHO of course. I'm partial to the guy because I've seen him several times. The first concert I saw of his, probably in 81 or 82, was in Louisville, Kentucky. This firery little red-head opened up for him that nobody had heard of before. Bonny Rait was her name.

3. Far too many to have a fave
Somedays it is Marty Robbins, other days it is a lady I know from a local punk band...I get quite passionate over music...that passion varies from day to day. I suppose for me music is like a pot of gold with no piece really outshining the other. I just posted this in the Photography Forum a couple of days ago SeattleGirl. These are a few of the rock musicians I have had the pleasure to have worked with over the last decade...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=280x31221

I confess the musicianship inspired me to go out so often with my camera gear that I made a small name for myself around here as a local band photographer. I continued going out shooting bands far longer than I should have but it was the music which drew me back time and time again.

6. Ronnie Montrose
I wish I could find a video of his cover of "Town Without Pity," which may be the best guitar work I've ever heard.

This is as close as I can come. He's the one in all white. Watch the fingers. In. credible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j-R_sZHXsg

The thing is, he can play just about anything with strings (and some without 'em) and in almost any style, and better than just about anybody.

10. It's a great blues jam
And maybe I'm biased — I've been a huge fan of his since 1973 — but it seems to me he just shredded those other guys.

I should've also mentioned Freddie Mercury because he was simply a god. He made love to audiences, and they returned it.

(Is that a verb?) at YouTube. I adore the song in the first place because I feel the same about radio, and that performance was absolutely masterful.

Every time I see those thousands and thousands of people clapping in unison, it makes me shiver.

Just watched it twice through, and felt a mixture of joy and sadness. Joy at the sheer exhiliration of the son, and sadness that Freddie is no longer with us.

Queen rocks, and Freddie rocks ABSOLUTELY!!!!

36. Here's a better one
It's live. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLWguslz_0c

They also did that "Ah! Leah!" (which I used to think was "Aleah" or somethin'). Never liked that one, but this sure does bring back memories of the late '70s and KSJO. :D

Thinking of that, I just looked for this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAVzYLPgUlc which features another throwback to that period. The song's a bit different from the one I remember, though — the version KSJO played had "Who listens to KSJO?" in the third chorus.

40. Try twistin' the plug
Sometimes just a tiny bit o' crud on it or in the jack will fuck up one or both channels. If it scratches and pops, squirt some WD-40 on the plug, then stick it in the jack and twist it a few times.

70. My favorite contemporary musician is Steve Earle.
I think he is an excellent songwriter and I admire his willingness to stand up for the things that are important to him: opposition to the war, opposition to the death penalty and his support for labor unions. I also appreciate the fact that he braved the wrath of his fellow countrymen in writing John Walker's Blues in an effort to try to see things from the viewpoint of someone who is accused of taking up arms against his own country.

71. I'll second that. John Walker's Blues took a lot of guts to write.
I recall that the CNN in house liberal at the time,Bill Press, dismissed the song with a simple "Steve Earle's an idiot." People were so hysterical over 911 that they couldn't take 2 1/2 minutes to listen to the song before condemning it.

Hardly a glorification of him,but a story of an American kid who was disillusioned with US society and looks for another way. In 1970 he would have wound up in a Buddhist monastry in Nepal;in 2000 he lands in a madrasa in Pakistan.

72. Beatles are my favorite artist overall
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 10:37 PM by mvd
Favorite singers? Probably Elvis on the male side, and Aretha and Patsy Cline on the female side.

on edit: I could add newer singers, but would have to think about it.

73. Tom Waits
Great expressive voice, one of the best songwriters in popular music, and he does the most varied and interesting arrangements.

Of all time, probably Bach - I never get tired of listening to him.

Johnny Cash is pretty damn cool too, of course.

75. Eric Clapton.
For 25 years he has never disappointed me. George was a better song writer but Eric was the best of the best with any guitar he ever picked up.

77. Chad Mitchell, Ricky Martin, Clay Aiken, Paul Potts. In that order.
Maybe Amy Winehouse; gotta see her live first.

81. Aimee Mann
you can't argue against Johnny Cash or Steve Earle or John Prine, but for me, Aimee often finds what's in MY heart and puts it into words in a way that blows me away every time.

Is she the "best" among those listed here? Probably not. But she is my favorite because of how her songs touch me.
