Prophetic? A song from 1994:
http://www.lyrics007.com/Stakka%20Bo%20Lyrics/Here%20We%20Go%20Lyrics.html

(CHORUS:)
Here we go again
Here we go go go to the temple of consumption
Get your gear and start to spend
Here we go go go with total dedication
Here we go again
Here we go go go to the temple of consumption
Get your gear and start to spend
Here we go, here we go, here we go
As some sort of prototype I serve to be
You see tomorrow's dream has never been a part of me
Consume today and leave the rest behind you
Tomorrow is a surprise party buy a ticket too
Faster living faster live as fast as you are able
Eat the food while it is still hot on the table
Spend if you can the greens are burning in your pocket
If you spend it right now you'll get as high as a rocket
Everything you don't use will lose its value tomorrow
Consume too much today and you can always borrow
This paradigm is the best one since the day of creation
Get your gear and shape up this is the revelation
Shop till you drop has built civilisation
Don't believe what you hear about the next generation
If you go with a lot of toys you slip away a happy man
The greens are burning in your pocket spend it while you can
(CHORUS)
The moon and the stars they all look down on me and say
There's a correlation between tomorrow and today
I say you won't gain a thing on that sick repudiation
We are right here right now that is the only situation
You can't fool me we live on borrowed time
So I spend the funds I have down to the nickle and dime
Check it in check it out, it is not a matter of contention
Get your gear and shape up and join the church of comsumption
Use it in, wear it out, then throw it all away
Go get yourself a new one all you got to do is pay
Because the more I will get the more I will own
With a lot of things around me I will never feel alone
I work around the clock just to earn my living
And I want to get I won't to spend my funds on giving
Now I'm acting irresponsible is that what you say
Hey Somalia got my toaster just the other day
(REPEAT CHORUS TO END)

And the actual song, complete with barely audible lyrics:

2. I'm still endeavoring to deduce the meanings of the song.

Note it's made by some cute Generation X'ers. The Gen X connotation implies sarcasm within the lyrics.

On the other hand, we ARE told to live for today.

And, right now, can you tell me we are not living on borrowed time?

In 1994, I didn't care. (Actually I did. That's why I'm still disease free... and single... today. But that's another story... and I digressed, I didn't care - that's partly how I got into massive, barely controlled debt. I learned over the years I was in debt...)

In 2007, why am I caring? The boomers are frittering the future away so why should I give a fuck? And that is NOT sarcastic, I regret to say. (I've never been a normal X'er...)

3. You've got to read Boomsday, Hypno
a great satire about boomers ruining the world and impoverishing the younger generations who pay for their Social Security.

5. And I'd recommend the new Doctor Who story "Boom Town" in return.
Aliens planning to destroy Earth just so they can use the energy created by the explosion to transport home; claiming the power plant to be built will create numerous jobs and spur Wales' economy.

The story is written and produced for mundane 8 year olds (go figure), but the core topic is surprisingly powerful.

The trouble with topical satire is, how much is truly fiction?

6. The fact we're still here makes us survivors.
We can only live as ourselves and make the most valiant struggle to grow and overcome our built-in limitations.

We also forget about the ambient environment. Take away the ability to live and what remains?

Again, I don't see imminent demise, but within a few years big change will be inevitable.

Of course, if the world economy collapses, the rich who are moving their wealth from the dollar to the Euro (or other developed nation's currency) will still lose it all, or at least be little better off than the rest of us.)

Gotta wait and see... and hope.

Until then, I've learned far before 1994 that with things around me, I will never be alone. ;) (And I say that with nary a single dirty joke in my mind.)

8. Agreed.
On both counts. :toast:

Just feeling lost right now.

Once I get that Samsung 32" LCD monitor, I'll be better. :D It'll double as the TV as well. Two birds, one stone, less electricity.

10. Thx! The new 32" model has a contrast ratio of 7000:1
which will make graphics design a lot easier.

In theory.

The only way to know is to try; but with my eyes, 1366:768 resolution displaced over 32" is gonna be nice.

Nice to know most stores don't have the 15% return fee as well. :)

12. Look at the cover art for Jefferson Airplane's "After Bathing at Baxters"
It has a background made of discarded trash, with a sign that says "Consume!" the message has been out there for a long time, but people keep not hearing it.
