I just built the coolest birdbath!

You can get this neat kit -- it has a liner and a pump, and you build the birdbath in the ground like a little pond. I have birds everywhere now; they love it.

And the cats sit in the kitchen window watching the excitement -- with their tails in the sink. :eyes:

7. Beautiful!
And that's exactly how we built our koi pond before adding the pump and filter. Gorgeous, ocelot!

15. I thought of making a koi pond.
But I live in a cold climate and I'd have to take them inside in the winter or they'd freeze. I was also worried that the raccoons would get them.

22. don't give up your idea, the winter isn't necessarily prohibitive
koi slow down into a semi-hibernation in the winter and don't need to be fed. You can buy a heater that goes into the water to keep the top from freezing over. My grandfather lived in Iowa (brrr) and his koi did fine even w/o a heater in the water  but to be on the safe side a heater would probably be best.

Can you post an online site for the kit? I'm very tempted to build one.

14. Here:

I didn't install the cascade part; I made my own out of rocks (it looked better).

16. It's not very difficult.
It took only a couple of hours to build the basic pond. Then I had to get the rocks and the plants, which involved more messing around. But it's not a daunting project at all.

19. NICE
That's just what I want to build but I've been afraid the pump will be complicated for me so I've been putting it off. I'm gonna get it done in the next couple of months though.
I always set water out on the porch for the birds but I want a little pond because I want to attract frogs.

What a GREAT job, I think that's beautiful.

20. We've been looking at solar pumps
This idea would adapt well to the solar pump, I think.

Cool. Thanks.

24. I just saw a cat drinking out of the birdbath.
It's late evening, and when I went to see what was out there, I saw its eyes glowing in the dark. Then it took off. I think it's the neighbor's fat cat who likes to hang around under the porch.

I think I'll have a lot of fun with this.
