So I lost my job today because I have been sick....
For two months I have been too sick to work. I had a temp job at a biotech firm and I kept hearing "don't worry, they are holding your job". Two weeks ago I said I was ready to come back..the temp agency said "not yet, wait till your supervisor comes off of vacation then you can come back". That was today. Apparantly the HR department decided there wasn't enough work for me to come back to, despite the fact that in the last two months 3 people in the department quit. There wasn't a whole lot of work when I started either. Now my temp agency has said "oh-we just said to CHECK to see if you could come back, not actually go in". RIIIGGHHT. If this was an HR decision (which is what I was told by my supervisor) then why couldn't they fucking tell me that two weeks ago. The temp agency could have been looking for a new position for me!:grr:
Both the company and the temp agency are lying to me. I know that the company was just looking for any excuse to cut me because I had one of the higher salaries as a tech/temp. Bastards.:grr: I hope they find something new for me soon, really hurting financially plus I have some big medical bills about to roll in...

3. talk to a lawyer
if you have a medical reason for missing work, you may qualify for the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). FMLA entitles you to up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave every year for a qualifying illness/disability. You also cannot be terminated while covered by the FMLA.

If you can get a doctor to sign off on your illness, you may qualify for it.

4. That's right.
But it's tricky in your case, because you're an employee of the temp agency. If the temp agency hasn't fired you, FMLA may not apply.

So sorry you've been sick.

6. not as a temp
as long as the agency doesn't fire you, the client can terminate your post at any time for any reason.

5. Sorry you've been sick and about the job
I'm just heartbroken about the way people are treated by their employers. Like we're just pieces of meat or something. I hope that things look up for you soon. :hug:

7. See another agency-- a high rate temp is a moneymaker. Someone should get you busy.

11. I am sorry to hear this....
Companies don't give a shit about Americans anymore.....

Also, depending on which state you live in....if your state has the

Washington State
At Will

<snip>
In Washington, employees are presumed to be “at will.” At-will employees may be terminated for any reason, so long as it is not illegal. Generally, employees that work under an employment contract can only be terminated for reasons specified in the contract. In Washington, in order to overcome the at-will presumption, an employee must show that the employer made clear and unequivocal statements of job security to the employee.

The most common exception to employment-at will is for public policy. This holds that an employee is wrongfully discharged if the termination is counter to an explicit policy of the government. One example is the discharge of an employee for filing a workers’ compensation claim.

<snip>

Good Luck!
