only ground beef I have is very lean... |
|
So I think I will cook one strip of bacon and dump the fat into a quarter pound of meat and make myself a burger. It's an experiment. :)

2. I quit eating any kind of beef after the mad cow announcement and |
|
after doing some research and knowing that over 500 people in the US already have CJ-like diseases.
Ok, so call me overly paranoid, but I am going to buy a meat grinder as soon as I can find someone who sells them, and then I am going to buy whole cuts of beef and grind them myself. Therefore, it will be very lean, and I will need to add some kind of fat.
To make a long comment short, let me know how it works! :-)

We use it in Venison around here.
Bacon fat is far tastier than beef fat anyway.
Just avoid any of the 'sweetened' varieties of bacon.
For some reason that sweetness just wont go away, and tastes bad in ground meat.

I'll try it. Wonder if you could just grind in some ground pork with it. You know, like the kind that looks like hamburger but is unseasoned.

I'm sure over 500 people die annually in the US from autoerotic asphyxiation. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have sex.
As for meat grinding, Kitchenaid makes an attachment for their mixers for this. It's also handy for chopping up fruit for cookies (like dates).

9. It's not just the disease, it's the AMR method of removing the meat from |
|
the carcass that grossed me out, mad cow or not. IT's just gross. So I am going to grind my own.
My dad has an old-timey hand grinder if I can't find a reasonably priced electric one, and Kitchenaid mixers are out of my price range.
Thanks for the info, though! :-)

10. Ugh, a hand grinder???? |
|
you're gonna be SORE!!!!! (at least if you do any volume)
Do you have the Ron Popiel/Rube Goldberg gene? If so, see about buying an inexpensive electric motor and mounting it on the handgrinder. It shouldn't be too hard to do if you're technically inclined.
I've used a handgrinder. Never again.

13. Do you have a food processor? |
|
Alton Brown (Good Eats on FOOD TV) uses it to grind beef. His instructions include which cuts to use for best results.
www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_10214,00.html
One of the reasons he grinds his own beef is to prepare safe burgers that are not cooked dry. So, adding pork is not advisable; it DOES need to be cooked a bit more. Fine to add pork for meatloaf, meatballs or chili.
Mad Cow aside, other issues have made me avoid pre-ground beef in the stores.

14. I just bought a grinder |
|
at Sears and I love it. I had wanted a non-electric one but in Daytona Beach I'll take whatever I can find. It was $110 but if for nothing more than my peace of mind, it was worth it. Here is the one I got. I ground meat for hamburger twice so far and I've had no problems and it's quick. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=APPL&pid=00848251000

6. I say no to hamburger - I just "know" too friggen much |
|
. . . I luv hamburger, make my own tho, cuz then I KNOW what's in it
I saw a documentary up here in Canukville, where "expired" meats on the rack are then ground up and repackaged as "fresh" hamburg -
sorta like saying you got a "new" engine in ur car, 100,000 kliks on it from a junkyard tho - -
Oh, and you chicken connoisseurs - which part of the Chicken starts to "rot" first
Yup, ur right, - the skin and the fat underneath,
- the same documentary discovered "outdated" chicken cuts, were "skinned", repackaged, and sold - AT A HIGHER PRICE
I luvs my chicken, but I wanna see it with its skin ON - I'll do the "skinnin'" myself thankyouverymuch !
sumthin' to think about
