"REM is Air Supply" got me to thinking about rock equivalencies. |
|
System of a Down = Jethro Tull Totally unnecessary techism paradoxically meets dumbed-down inanity. They get away with it because they rock sufficiently and the kiddiez are dumbed down, themelves.
The Shins = The Raspberries Pleasant enough, insubstantial enough, forgettable enough.
Paramore = Missing Persons Fronted by a cupcake who's just watchable enough to mask the band's ultimately prosaic, mired-in-its-times pop.
Rye Coalition = Tuff Darts Early promise finally yielded something too stupid to live.
Tool = Rush Every generation pukes up ONE lucky rock group that gets to sell millions AND unaccountably pass themselves off as a thinkin'-man's band.
Gogol Bordello = the Pogues One-joke ethnic gimmick band nevertheless achieves transcendence and is destroyed by excess. Yeah, I know Gogol's still OK. Eugene's fucking insane. So just wait.
Electric Six = Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show 'Tis folly to think it'll be funny forever, smart guy. Last stop before the dustbin: MOR ballads.
Wilco = Blondie Innovators emerging from a storied scene to become opportunistic, unfocused pop eclecticists is more boring than sad.
Sufjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart, etc. = Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor, etc. Fuck you. Fuck you with a rake.
The Hold Steady = Weezer Your smartypants fans are WAITING for you to fuck up so they can all grin smugly and say "I told you so."

occupies the same order of magnitude of abstraction from its alleged/and/or/presumed artistic source/root.
Of course I'm just paraphrasing one of Sun Ra's dreams here.
But it is still all too true.

17. So many bands sound like someone else nowadays...I don't listen anymore |
|
nothing original anymore. The last time I heard something with the slightest bit of creativity was from the 80's, and that may not even be considered creative by some

21. The 80's mainly.....but everything I try to listen to today sounds...I don't |
|
know...recycled? ( if that makes any sense ) It seems like I heard it all before, but someone new on the scene is doing their rendition....and most of the time their rendition blows.
I just remember music and music videos from the 80's ( when I was growing up ) and I still listen to it. Some people on here say it's cheesy, but there are so many non-cheesy classic songs and artists that have made a tremendous impact on todays music that we listen to. It frustrates me sometimes, and makes me feel like an old man whining ( and I'm not old at all )!

31. I'm always curious what people are listening to |
|
from 'today' that makes them say this. Granted, there is a lot of swill out there pretending to be wine. But somehow, I never seem that hard pressed to come up with something good and original. So, it makes me curious what other people like to begin with, and then what they've found that's made them reach this conclusion.

I respect the guy for a lot of non-musical reasons, but I can't stand listening to his music. Wink wink, you know that I know that you know I'm just a fuckin' goof, so here's a session musician playing a tricky fill. Wheedly wheedly wheeeeee. Poop joke, overlong drum solo, joke about a televangelist's dick, goodnight.
