Juliet Lee, a 107-pound salon manager from Maryland, demolished the competition in the 5th Annual Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest by downing 26 franks and buns in 12 minutes.

The contest at the MacArthur Center was a qualifying event for Nathan's international competition, which ESPN will televise live from Coney Island, N.Y., on July 4.

Lee, 41, was the only woman in Saturday's field of 13. Her 26-dog meal was substantially more than the men flanking her and weighing in at 360 and 359 pounds could manage.

"Seven hundred-nineteen pounds of man, and they are losing to a 107-pound woman!" announcer George Shea yelled into a microphone as the crowd roared.

Mike Cotterell, the large Chesapeake man on Lee's right, stood and shook his head in wonder as the crowd counted down the last 10 seconds. Lee kept stuffing her cheeks.

In "reality," as you cite, these two things (hunger & food stuffing contests) of course are not mutually exclusive things. They're not evenly related. :) It's not like contest sponsors are robbing the local food pantries to get the weiners for these contests. I participate in several food drives every year and not once have we fallen short of our goals because of these contests. They're fun and silly and let couch potatoes believe they could be famous athletes too.

Damn, sorry that hunger is such a buzzkill for you, but for many people in this country alone it is a daily reality. Sure, you meet your food pantry goals every year, but not ever food pantry does. Many of the hungry don't have access to a food pantry. And put yourself in this position: You're homeless, thirty pounds underweight, with your belly growling. You're hanging out in the bus station or where ever to suck in some free AC before you hit the pavement again, and lo and behold, what comes on TV. A group of people sucking down food enough for dozens, all in some assinine competition. In a country suffering from an obesity crisis none the less. Gee, talk about a buzzkill. That is adding insult to injury, don't you think?

But heaven forbid somebody throws the cold water of reality on you eh? Don't want to kill your buzz, hmm? Oh fucking well. Tell you what friend, why don't you go without food for a few days, get that hard knot in your belly going, and then watch one of those damn insulting "contests". Then get back to me on this issue, for it is obvious that despite your moral posturing you have absolutely no clue as to what the hungry or homeless go through day in, day out, and how our society intentionally and unintentionally abuses and insults this segment of our population. Walk a fucking mile in their shoes before you deign to decide what societal norms are and aren't OK for the least powerful in our society.
