2. I drive an full size 1996 Ford Bronco
so I guess I'm exiled too. Maybe Skinner can start an SUV forum?

Forget the fact that I only drive it about 3000 miles a year and burn less gas in a year than all the "holier than thou's".

SUVs get most of the vitriol, but minivans get their share too.

The best things about my Sienna are that it's only 4.5 years old, it has 50K miles on it, and it's 100% paid for. I have no desire to saddle myself with another car payment for a long while.

Dumbassery is not a function of owning an SUV.

19. OK, I admit it. I drive a crossover SUV
I've hated SUVs for years. Never understood the need for those giants nor did I ever want to drive one. I was always a small car person. However, last year, I ruptured a disk in my lower back and learned that I have degenerative disk disease, so even when the ruptured disk healed, the likelihood of rupturing another disk is 100%. Trying to bend to get into a small or even a regular car (like my husband's) was absolute torture. The SUV that I bought is the small size one, but the seat level is perfect. I don't have to bend to get into the car, nor do I have to climb up into it like most of the other SUVs. I can slide in horizontally cause the seat is at hip level. It has restored my enjoyment of driving and I am no longer in pain. I won't give it up.

23. i dumped my 2000 Durango for a 6 cyc SUV
it gets a lot better mileage

and then we bought a '91 6 cyc sedan for the 2nd car. between the two we average 23MPG instead of the 16 we used to get

I'm glad with gas prices these days, but if you can afford to run em, why not?

I'm keeping my old ones until I wear them out cuz it takes a lot more resources to build a new car than what my old ones are using at this point (and no car payment is an added bonus  )

27. Yep...my '02 Accord has 129K on it, looks and performs beautifully,
and gets 34 mpg overall in the warm weather! If a meteor fell out the sky and crushed it into a smoking little lump tomorrow, I would most likely replace it with a Civic Hybrid or Prius, but it doesn't make a lot of financial sense to do that at the moment, given the condition of my current ride. I just keep saving toward my the down payment of the next vehicle!

41. No doubt about that - my previous one went to 250K, and then my
ex drove it another few years to just over 300k, where some exhaust components started rotting and corroding, and she didn't want to put any more money into it at that point. I was kind of pissed she didn't say anything to me about until afterward, as I had replaced the original components (as the result of rust) and the shop's work was guaranteed for the remaining life of the car. They would probably lose money on that policy if everyone kept theirs as long as I did!

My fuel economy has gotten incrementally better as the car has aged...the old one did as well!

31. We got rid of ours, but for a different reason.
It wasn't a good carpool car for me at the time. I was transporting 5 little ones to elementary school every day and it was too hard to use. I would have to put the car in park, open the driver's side rear door, get those guys out then walk around, do the same with the passenger side and fold the seat forward for the kids in the back seat.

Got to be way too much of a pain, although I did love driving it.

32. No but
Just like people who smoke in the same room and you have to breathe it, remember that you are sharing the same planet, air, ozone layer and finite fossil fuels as the rest of us. And just like cigarette smoke is bad for people's health yet they do it, it's a fact that SUV's are harmful to the environment so a person has to ask themselves why they choose to do that at the expense of the rest of the world.

Do we want our grandchildren to have to use SPF 200 sunscreen in 20 years just to go outside so we can ride in a bigger car today? :hi:

38. True, all cars are harmful but some more than others
Most larger vehicles burn double the fuel and produce double the emissions. It reminds me of this roommate I had once who would get so drunk she'd pass out in the hallway and piss all over herself and if you criticized her about it the first words out of her mouth were, "you drink too". The choice is up to the individual on what they buy for a vehicle and nothing else. Having lived in two different European countries I've seen many families driving around in all environments without an enormous vehicle to do it in. Not accusing or directing this at you but this is the only country where people say, "I need my SUV" when it's obvious that they just want an SUV.

As far as driving a vehicle till the wheels fall off and living in an older home that's us. I'm 44 years old but the next new car I buy, maybe in about 5 - 7 years will hopefully be the car I die with.

40. If you need to have an SUV
trade the Durango for a Santa Fe, way better mpg.

If you need a van, trade down to a Kia Rondo or Mazda5: better for you, better for the environment

If you can get by with a regular car, then do so and get a good one, and a smaller one: Versa, Fit, Rio, Accent, Elantra, Corolla, Scions, Mazada3, Civic, Prius, Sentra, Any of these is a way better option. I Edmunds friends say the others I have not named are either not a good value, have unknown reliabilty or should have better mpg such as Lancer.

43. These are things I already know.
These cars are paid for, and we're not trading them for anything we have to finance.

I posted this thread in response to several other threads using a VERY wide brush to paint SUV owners as selfish and stupid. Reading the Lounge today made me feel like I'm not a worthy DUer because our cars don't meet the progressive litmus test.

46. I drive one and I'm not turning in my DU membership...
I bought mine new in '96 when I owned a store and had to haul inventory. It now has only 76k miles on it and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. I think my driving 7k miles a year in my big, bad, polluting SUV is nothing compared to people who pop out 4-6 kids and think nothing of that.

People don't NEED 4-6 kids either, but they have them. I have 0. We all have our personal gripes and pet peeves. Is the lady driving the prius with 5 kids more environmentally conscious than me? I doubt it. Negatively affecting the planet more than me? I don't doubt that a bit. But I don't judge someone by the # of kids she has in the car just like I don't judge someone by the kind of car they drive. No one knows the whole story and to judge based on what you perceive from a 2 second glance is idiotic & shallow.

47. Bless me Father, for I haved sinned... according to DU
I drive a '02 Infiniti QX4. It's a midsize SUV. We camp a lot, sometimes we pull a popup, other times we go tent camping (going tomorrow, in fact). In either case, we really use up the space. Even when we pull the popup it gets 19 mpg. Otherwise, it's my everyday car, and since I don't work, I diligently try to plan errands so that I don't drive more than 5-20 miles per day. Additionally, my husband rides a motorcycle to work. If I still worked, we would probably give up camping so that I would drive a more fuel-efficient auto.
