At least until medical science came up with a way to help fix the problem, and suddenly it was everywhere. I have male friends of all ages (from 22 to mid 60's) who've had at least occasional problems with ED. I was surprised at just how prevalent it really is.

One of the Docs mentioned that ED is more common now than ever owing to an epidemic of obesity related Diabetes and high blood pressure.

I think humans have been taking aphrodisiacs for all of human history; in fact there are many things that are eaten as aphrodisiacs particularly in Asia that probably are not at all effective and that come from endangered species which have been poached. I think it was probably under the table in sexually repressed cultures, in the same way birth control was and the west is less sexually repressed now than it has been since probably the 20's or so...only now the pharmaceutical industries have gotten into the game and learned how to make money off this stuff.
