i can play the guitar like a m*ther f*cking riot....

What I Got-- Sublime

Early in the mornin'
Risin' to the street
Light me up that cigarette
And i strap shoes on my feet
Got to find a reason
Reason things went wrong.
Got to find the reason why my money's all gone.

I got a dalmation
And i can still get high.
I can play the guitar like a mother fucking riot.

Life is too short so love the one you got
Cause you might get run over or you might get shot.
Never had to battle with no bulletproof vest.
Never start no static i just get it off my (chest).
Take a small example, a tip from me...
Take all of your money and give it up to charity.
Lovin's what i got, it's within my reach
(and the sublime style is still straight from long beach)
It all comes back to you you're going to get what you deserve.
Try and test that, you're bound to get served.
Love's what i got, don't start a riot,
You feel it when the dance gets hot.

Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.
Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.

Why i don't cry when my dog runs away.
I don't get angry at the bills i have to pay.
I don't get angry when my mom smokes pot,
Hits that bottle and goes right to the rock.
Fuckin and fighting, it's all the same.
To live with louie dog's the only way to stay sane.
Let the lovin', let the lovin' come back to me.

Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.
Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.
Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.
Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.
Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.
Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.
Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that.
Lovin', is what i got, i said remember that

1. I love that song
But Santeria is one of my favorite songs. #2 on the list if you discount Red Hot Chili Peppers songs.

So sad about the singer.

Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 08:30 PM by Alexander
Just like Sublime was a shitty-ass, no-talent band.

I don't care if the lead singer OD'd on heroin. Being a junkie doesn't automatically mean you have talent. Look at Sid Vicious.

BTW, Brad: You couldn't play the guitar for shit.

Obviously you do to some degree.

Sorry to piss on your parade. But I really dislike blatant musical thievery. There's a big difference between being inspired by a song and totally ripping a song off and crediting it to yourself, and Bradley Nowell did the latter. It's a note-for-note rip-off of "Lady Madonna". Listen to the two - how could you call it anything else?

"I disagree that it is a stolen song"

It is a stolen song. Whether you agree or disagree is irrelevant - the melody, phrasing and even some of the rhymes are exactly the same. Stolen is as stolen does.

"I like the band

You have your opinion, I have mine"

See, saying you like the band is an opinion. We can agree to disagree on that.

Saying "What I Got" isn't stolen is not an opinion. It's an incorrect fact. And as Senator Clinton's predecessor said, you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

I know it sucks to hear, because Sublime is clearly one of your favorite bands. But try playing both songs to someone with a more objective viewpoint and see what they think. ;)

I was trying to remember the melody for that forgettable song, when it struck me that damn, this sounds familiar (independently of your comment, which utterly lit the bulb!).

A note for note ripoff. How sad.

And to think that George Harrison got SUED for "My Sweet Lord." AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHH!

Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 04:14 AM by Alexander
Then I really don't know what to tell you.

"Lady madonna, children at your feet.
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet.
Who finds the money? when you pay the rent?
Did you think that money was heaven sent?"

Contains exactly the same melody, phrasing, beat and chord progressions as:

"Early in the mornin'
Risin' to the street
Light me up that cigarette
And i strap shoes on my feet
Got to find a reason
Reason things went wrong.
Got to find the reason why my money's all gone."

It's a note-for-note rip off, and obvious to anyone with a working pair of ears. The first measure even has the same rhyme!

If you can't hear it, then I want some of what you're apparently smoking.

BTW - I didn't say "riff", I said "melody". There's a difference.

As far as the music, it may not be the best and obviously is not worthwhile in your opinion, but many people admire it for what it is.

As far as Date Rape goes, i'm not quite sure you got what they were saying.

"I'm not sure if you're aware, but alot of their songs..feature lyrics which most of us here at DU would appreciate because of the messages behind them."

The Clash did the same thing, only much better. It's not so much what the lyrics say, but how they say it. I find Sublime's lyrics to be insipid and about as clever as beating yourself over the head with a 2x4.

"As far as the music, it may not be the best and obviously is not worthwhile in your opinion, but many people admire it for what it is."

If I want to listen to three white guys who think they're the next Bob Marley, I'll listen to the Police, thanks.

"As far as Date Rape goes, i'm not quite sure you got what they were saying."

I "got" exactly what they were saying - don't patronize me. I just don't like the lyrics, and I don't think they were very talented musicians.

I was merely pointing out the song is stolen.

Most people, even those who initially disagreed with me, can see that.

I'm not saying you should or should not like Sublime. I voiced my own opinion about them but you are entitled to your own.

I'm merely contesting Southpawkicker's repeated claims that "What I Got" is somehow not a blatant rip-off of the Beatles "Lady Madonna".

I know many Zep songs were ripped off. I can accept that fact because I'm not blind to hero worship.

When you're done debating your straw man, listen to both songs back-to-back, and tell me what you think.

45. "Inspiration" vs. "borrowing" vs. "stealing" is a continuum...
Nearly every band is inspired by another. I have no problem with that.

Some even borrow from or quote other musicians, or nowadays sample. If they at least mention where they got it from, I have no problem with that.

But taking someone else's song, note-for-note, and passing it off as your own? No thanks. I'd be expelled from college if I tried that on a paper, and rightfully so, but apparently it makes a lot of musicians famous.

Why don't you and Led Zep, and Willie Dixon/Muddy Waters, and Sublime, and the Beatles all go to court and hash this out. In the meantime are there any objections to the rest of us rocking out to whatever in the hell trips our trigger?

53. Well, they were also far more famous.
Led Zeppelin had about 8 albums' worth of material, much of which was not stolen. Were the songs "What Is And What Should Never Be", "Kashmir" and "Black Dog" all stolen?

Sublime had two big hits. Two. One of them is a terribly unpleasant song about prison rape. The other is really a Beatles song.

"IMO LZ are bigger rip off artists than Sublime. 'The way you squeeze my lemon...' seems to me I've heard that before!"

Robert Plant has always been my least favorite member of Led Zeppelin, and this is one of the reasons.

"Why don't you and Led Zep, and Willie Dixon/Muddy Waters, and Sublime, and the Beatles all go to court and hash this out."

That's ridiculous. I have to go to court just because I pointed out an instance of clear plagiarism?

The responses and PMs I've been getting suggested a lot of people thought "What I Got" sounded awfully familiar but couldn't place where it came from.

Since they now know, I consider my goal a success - which was to educate people about where that song really came from, NOT to piss on anyone's parade or get people to hate Sublime.

"In the meantime are there any objections to the rest of us rocking out to whatever in the hell trips our trigger?"

There was never any objection from me. Anyone who says so is merely creating straw men. You can like or dislike Sublime all you want - I really don't care.

54. It's ok because Zep was more famous and Sublime only
had 2 songs. Seems like an awful lot of qualifiers. 'LZ had about 8 albums worth of material, much of which was not stolen.' Great! Is there some sort of a quota I am not aware of as far as ripping other artists off? LZ can rip off 10% and that's ok, but if Sublime rips off 40% then no one should listen to 'em?

Please let the rest of us know so we can abide. And regardless of what you think, you did rain on the OP's parade. He/she was rockin' out and probably didn't have a care in the world... until you pointed out some convoluted BS that gets deeper as we go along. LZ has been accused of being rip offs a hell of a lot more than Sublime has... but that doesn't stop you!

57. I'm not made of straw.
Which I'm sure disappoints you, since you're merely attacking straw men.

"It's ok because Zep was more famous and Sublime only had 2 songs. Seems like an awful lot of qualifiers."

You made several incorrect statements throughout your last rant. This is one of them. I never said it's "okay" Zeppelin stole music.

But if all of Zeppelin's stolen songs were never put on an album, we'd still know about them. Not so for Sublime - their most popular song is blatantly plagiarized.

"Great! Is there some sort of a quota I am not aware of as far as ripping other artists off? LZ can rip off 10% and that's ok, but if Sublime rips off 40% then no one should listen to 'em?"

No. Another straw man. Ripping off artists is wrong. However, since Zeppelin has plenty of good original songs, many of which were hits, and IMO Sublime does not, I am quicker to forgive Zep.

You are confusing fact with opinion. I don't like Sublime - but I never said you shouldn't like them, or that no one should listen to them. Despite your ranting and raving, I have not told anyone who they should listen to, and I'm getting pretty tired of you putting words in my mouth.

"Please let the rest of us know so we can abide."

How many times do I need to say it? You can listen to whatever the fuck you want. I don't care. I offered my opinion. Don't like it? Too fucking bad.

You, HuskerDU, are not that important to me, despite what your ego tells you. Certainly not important enough that I'd care about what you listen to.

"And regardless of what you think, you did rain on the OP's parade."

Boo hoo. I got enough PMs and responses thanking me for educating people. Apparently a few DUers were wondering why that song was so familiar. I did what I came here to do, and don't know why you are still whining and carrying on about it.

"He/she was rockin' out and probably didn't have a care in the world... until you pointed out some convoluted BS that gets deeper as we go along."

There's nothing "convoluted" about stealing a song note-for-note, and having it be your biggest hit ever.

"LZ has been accused of being rip offs a hell of a lot more than Sublime has... but that doesn't stop you! Please, of all the artists to mention... Led Zep?!?"

You either don't read or you can't read, I can't tell which. But I mentioned Zeppelin for a reason - which I will repeat again: you listen to whatever the fuck you want. I don't care.

I myself like some bands who have stolen songs, like Led Zeppelin. I'm just not blinded by hero worship to the point where I refuse to accept that a band I like stole some tunes.

I mentioned that I don't like Sublime. This is my opinion, and mine alone. I wasn't posting here to change minds about Sublime. I was posting to let otherwise ignorant people know that the song in question is stolen.

Were all of Sublime's hits stolen?

About 50% of them were, and the other 50% just sucked, in my opinion.

Were all of Led Zeppelin's hits stolen?

Not even close, and what's more, most of the hits were quite good. In my opinion.

Hence, I don't like Sublime. I do like Led Zeppelin. Both of them stole music, but I find Zep's original material to be better. Simple enough for you?

Sheesh. :eyes:

If a bunch of drunken college kids decide to sing it ad nauseum, thinking it's the pinnacle of great songwriting and originality when it was a ripped-off, half-sung version of a perfectly good Beatles tune....and then jump down the throat of anyone who points that fact out because they are blind to hero worship (or they want to be "cool"), then yes, that is stupid.

You can like it all you want. But if you refuse to accept that it's very obviously plagiarized, then I feel sorry for you. Many songs I like are plagiarized. But I can accept the fact that some bands rip off other musicians, even bands I like.

Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 08:09 PM by Alexander
So instead you argue with what you wish I had said.

"If a bunch of drunken college kids decide to sing it ad nauseum, thinking it's the pinnacle of great songwriting and originality when it was a ripped-off, half-sung version of a perfectly good Beatles tune....and then jump down the throat of anyone who points that fact out because they are blind to hero worship (or they want to be "cool"), then yes, that is stupid."

Your dishonesty is only exceeded by your apparent inability to read. :eyes:

65. no alexander i wasn't replying to that post
this one:

Oh god yes. Stupid college kids everywhere adore that song.

It is overplayed, oversung, overheard, and the irony is over the heads of most Sublime fans.

It's the catchiest and most popular Sublime song ever, and yet it's blatantly stolen. What does that say about their talent level?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

so now your ability to follow a thread is only exceeded by your inability to remember what you actually did say.

I think i will stand on what i did say :D

But nowhere did I say that someone is stupid for listening to Sublime.

However, Sublime is popular among the stupid crowd.

I must be in their presence or something. :eyes:

48. Sublime steals songs. Get over it!
I know you love them.

Your continued defense of Sublime (and refusal to acknowledge/accept the obvious similarities in the two songs) shows that you are so far gone that if the ghost of Bradley Nowell visited you in your sleep and said "I stole that song", you still wouldn't accept it. :eyes:

49. I just love it when others jump into someone else's
fun-loving thread just to bring it down! I find it hilarious. Sublime isn't by any means my favorite band, but I did love them at one time! If they stole the song then they stole the song, but it doesn't mean it still isn't a good song. Oh and they do have other songs btw!

Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 03:09 PM by Alexander
"just to bring it down!"

No, just to educate people who were ignorant of the obvious similarities. And judging from many responses I've been getting, I was very successful in that.

"Sublime isn't by any means my favorite band, but I did love them at one time!"

I liked them too. Then I graduated high school. Looking back, I can't see what the fuss was all about.

"If they stole the song then they stole the song,"

Finally, a reasonable comment.

"but it doesn't mean it still isn't a good song."

Yes, "Lady Madonna" is a wonderful song. I agree completely.

"Oh and they do have other songs btw!"

Yeah, the other famous one they have is that song "Date Rape", featuring lyrics like "He was butt-raped by a large inmate".

:puke:

Maybe I should have explained myself. I have been a musician since I was about 6 years old, and very much into theory and technique and all that.

So when I hear a song, the aesthetic part of me asks "Do I like this, or not?" and the musician part of me asks "Is this good music?". If I can instantly tell the melody is the same as another song, the musician in me gets bothered.

If on top of that I don't really like the song (which is the case with "What I Got"), then I get turned off by it.

Why should thieves make millions stealing while honest, creative musicians aren't getting anything?

(BTW, as much as I like Led Zeppelin, they are over-rated)

55. 'Why should thieves make millions stealing while honest,
creative musicians aren't getting anything?' Thanks to people like you the Beatles will always 'get theirs' while old bluesmen can just talk to the hand. It's ok because you don't hero worship and are a musician. Oh and because LZ are famous. Hold on while I straighten out my notes about all this- a bunch of new rules to me!

61. Okay - which Beatles tunes were stolen note-for-note? Please enlighten us.
"Thanks to people like you the Beatles will always 'get theirs' while old bluesmen can just talk to the hand."

Uh, no. I disapprove of any stealing, in case I didn't make that perfectly clear, and I find your remarks highly insulting.

"People like me"? WTF are you trying to say? Don't be a wimp, come out and say it or shut up!

"It's ok because you don't hero worship"

I don't worship Sublime, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles or anyone else, no. In other words, I can admit that the sky is blue.

"and are a musician."

Straw man.

"Oh and because LZ are famous."

Hello? Was "Ramble On" stolen? "Immigrant Song"? "Black Dog"? "That's The Way"? "Kashmir"? "Over The Hills And Far Away"?

I can go on and on for a long time naming Led Zeppelin hits that were not stolen. I cannot do the same with Sublime. If this still means nothing to you, you might need your head examined.

"Hold on while I straighten out my notes about all this- a bunch of new rules to me!"

There are no "rules" at all - and I don't appreciate your continued dishonesty.

Simply put, Led Zeppelin had many hits which weren't stolen. Sublime had one. And I didn't like it.

Therefore, I like Led Zeppelin more than I like Sublime. You may disagree, and that's fine. I'm not telling you what to listen to or what not to listen to. I just don't care about you enough.

Maybe when you quit using straw men and regurgitating the same tired arguments, we can have a real discussion. :eyes:

I have listened to this and Lady Madonna

fucking complete bullshit to say it is just theft of that song by sublime

get ears examined by a specialist immediately if you hear the same songs in this and Lady Madonna

No fucking way they are the same melody.
