Poll question: Greatest underrated band of the so-called Seattle "grunge" scene
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 08:42 AM by slj0101
I'm including artists throughout the Northwest, so Portland, Olympia, Idaho, etc. also qualify.

And by underrated, I mean the bands that didn't sell millions of records or received tons of press.

5. It's sad what could have been.
"48 Hrs." had a very good episode on the Mia Zapata murder investigation a couple years ago.

4. Seaweed or Pond.
Although Pond was really of the "second wave" of SubPop bands and didn't really become great until they got signed by a major, ironically enough (Their 1997 album "Rock Collection" is excellent).

And I believe it was Seaweed who did a cover of "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and almost made me like the Smiths for a few minutes.

17. Pond's first album was fantastic
One of my all-time favorites; much more straightforward than their later records, but I loved the awesome metallic riffing and songs. I was just playing "tree" on my show the other day; some of the best stutter-drumming I've ever heard is on that song...

One of our local faves, Voodoo Gearshift, migrated out there eventually.

11. How 'bout The Melvins?
They might not be my favorite band from that time or place, but I think their influence on some of the big guns like Nirvana and Soundgarden is undeniable.

12. Fuck yeah, the Melvins!
I left them off because technically, they relocated to San Fran in the late 80's, but they were one of the first in that whole scene.

I'll see if it's not too late to add them to the poll.

19. Not grunge, but Sky Cries Mary is my fav underrated 90s Seattle band
Annoyingly hippy-dippy lyrics, yes, but they had a great sound and versatile arrangements. Very friendly and approachable too.

20. I voted Tad.
They blasted the hell out of the Babylon A Go-Go when they opened for Primus. "Wood Goblins" is one powerful-ass song.

28. The Presidents of the US of A
They were the anti-grunge band. They were in the same era and they provided a respite from the Sturm Und Drang of grunge. Sky Cries Mary was pretty awesome and Inflatable Soule rocked the house ( those Cornell sisters, YEAH!!)

29. Stakka Bo
Part jazz, part hiphop, part alternative, their first album 'Supermarket' came out in 1994. Their followup came out in 1996 and the one song I listened to was rather different... pity.
