33. I have been unable to sleep.

Night after night, I wonder where you have been, what you are doing and with whom. I have tried to travel to distract myself. I have been to Zanzibar, to Tunisa, Sri Lanka, Tierra Del Fuego, Moldovia, but to no avail.

It always comes back. You have not been here.

I went for therapy. I tried medication. I got a dog, then a goat, then a Siberian Tiger, a platypus, but none were a substitute.

I tried to drink it away, but it only reminded me of the drinks you used to serve here.

I changed my friends. I tried new religious faiths. I tried surgery.

Still no relief.

I tried dancing, learning to play the saxaphone, working all night at a hockey rink. I got married. I raised children. I shaved my head. Nothing worked. Still I found myself missing you.

I went for yodeling lessons in Lichtenstein. I learned Sanskrit and translated ancient sacred texts into Cherokee and Urdu. I worked like a demon into the night, trying to explain Perelman's proof of Poincare's conjecture to the Platypus, but after a while, even the Platypus knew what was really on my mind...

Please don't explain where you've been. I could not, at this point, bear to know. It is enough that you have returned. If you must go again, don't tell me. It would ruin me totally to anticipate that I will not know, once more, where you are, what you are doing, who you are with...
