What REAL friends do:
We just got home after a month away.
When we left we REALLY shut the house down.

Turned the water off in the street at the meter. Too many of our friends have had catastrophic "small" plumbing leaks while away for extended periods.

Turned the water heater off.

Put the thermostat at 85.

A couple of days before we returned, I sent an e-mail to a friend down the street. Just asked her to go put the thermostat on 73. We've had an early heat wave in coastal Alabama. Hit 100+ in Mobile the other day. Didn't want to come in from a long day's drive to a hot house.

When we walked into the kitchen there was a note taped to the fridge.
"Turned the water on this morning. And the water heater. Thermostat is a 73. Casserole (with cooking directions) and salad in the fridge. And some milk and eggs. Loaf of bread on the counter. Carl cut the grass. We really missed y'all. Call us when you get in. Drinks tomorrow evening?"

Folks, THAT is friends.

3. I agree, and I have a friend who did the same for us last year.
We were away for two weeks. Friend kept the cat for us. We also turned the thermostat to 85.

We came home to a cool house (she turned the air conditioner on that morning), a homemade macaroni and cheese, a fresh carton of milk and loaf of bread. And she even polished my silver coffee service.

I agree, trof. That's friends.

8. When I was 6 years old my Grandfather died on December 20th
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 07:29 PM by JVS
He was the first of my grandparents to die and it was quite upsetting for my Father. Although the 1000 mile trip to Minnesota was a journey that we usually made by car, dad didn't consider it wise to attempt the drive at the time, seeing as it was cold and there were few hours of daylight to drive in (this was also the era of the universal 55 mph speed limit). The next day we were on an airplane, a first for my brother and me. The next few days were a blur. You see, Grampa had died of a stroke at the age of 82 while moving boxes out to his car in the driveway. Unfortunately he was unwilling to ask for help from his nephew, who would have gladly lent a hand. He and my Grandmother had been planning on moving into a retirement community in Minneapolis from their small house in a small Minnesota town. This meant that there was not just a funeral to deal with, but that my Grandmother needed to be moved. Since my brother and I were too young to be of any help, we were shuffled between elderly relatives and family friends while the younger relatives helped my parents and Grandma to complete the move. I remember sledding with a family that we usually only saw on vacations. After the funeral and the move, we had to drive home in Grampa's car because Grandma had no use for it and it had been decided that we could use it. On the way home we stopped in Michigan to visit my other Grandparents. All this time we had not had any Christmas celebration. I don't really think my brother and I noticed that we had missed the holiday, that's how strange the whole experience was. Finally we got home on December 27th and when we walked into the house our neighbor Jim and his wife had set up and decorated a tree in our living room and wrapped up the presents that mom had in her closet. They were never asked to do a thing, but since they were good friends of ours and had the key, they just went ahead and did it. I say THAT is a pair of friends.

14. And: Friends help ya make bail. REAL friends are next to you in jail...
sayin, "Shit that was fun!"

Seriously, it is good to be reminded how decent and kind most people really are. Just about anyone is a potential hero. Most people will do good things. Some are real good at figuring out which good things need doin NOW.

Glad to here trof is home safe

15. Wow
Not that's a sweet thing to come home to. I usually come home to a trashed house with a stinky fridge.

You are lucky.

19. Wow, how nice
Sadly, there is too little of that left in US neighborhoods anymore. You're lucky to have such friends and must be quite a friend yourself!
