3. Umm, they're talking about the apocalypse.
The hypothetical end of the world. Something tells me if it's raining hellfire and all that shit, ecological sustainability will take a back seat to not having mobs of the undead and various post-apocalyptic crazies and shit fucking you up.

5. Yeah, I wouldn't trust a Prius in the event of the apocalypse.
That's the only time I would ever consider buying an H1 or H2.

7. Didn't the writer read "The Stand"?
Gotta go with the motorcycle. The roads will be littered with cars because of the drivers that get raptured away.

15. Yes, unless one of these has an old points gas or mech. diesel engine.
Old Rabbit diesels laugh at the thought of an EMP.

24. The Toureg's TDI is a diesel engine.
It's the only worthwhile vehicle in the list. Except maybe that bike...

27. It's a TDI, bit it's not EMP-proof.
The new TDIs are electronically controlled. If you want to install a TDI engine from a late model VW into some other car you must get the complete wiring harness and the all of the electronics including the computer. It's like if you wanted to transplant an EFI Ford 5.0 HO engine into an early Mustang.

I can't afford a new TDI anything. I have been playing with old IDI VW 1.6 diesels which are completely mechanical and I've looked into other VW transplants. Anyway, an EMP pulse will not disable an old gas engine with points ignition nor a mechanically-injected diesel. That's assuming the flash and shock wave does not kill you. Not that EMPs are really a problem for most people. :-)

31. d'oh - I missed your *mechanical* stipulation
New TDIs are far too expensive. So are recent-model used ones. I got an '01 Jetta TDI recently, and it was dangerously close to 5 figures. Then again this car will carry me my next 300K+ miles, so I consider it money well spent.

For a bulletproof, EMP-proof older diesel, look into Mercedes. The powerplant behind the mid-80s 300SD will run on an alcoholic's urine in a pinch. ;-)

18. An ultralight, maybe, or a small light-sport
This is an ultralight. Remember that scene in "Howard the Duck"?

Seats one, no more than a 5-gallon gas tank, does no more than about 60mph. Folds up when not in use. Weights 254 pounds maximum. You could probably fold the wings up and use it as a propeller-pushed car if needed. Takes of and lands on a dime. By law, the highest stall speed allowed is a mere 24 knots.

This is a really small Light Sport Aircraft, or LSA

Cruises at 75 mph or so, with a 12-gallon tank. Basically an 'grand touring' ultralight with more power, range, creature comforts, and better instruments. I thing the wing comes off as well.

You can cruise around in these, landing in remote areas to venture forth to steal food and gasoline. Take off and escape angry pitch-fork wielding locals.

19. Pinzgauer...
Is the one I would choose. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinzgauer_High_Mobility_All-Terrain_Vehicle

The Pinzgauer is a remarkable offroad vehicle. Its capabilities are comparable to that of the HMMWV (Hummer) and vastly exceed the Jeep.

* 45 degree approach and departure angle
* 100% slope or until tyres lose traction
* 700 mm fording depth
* Can climb down a 360 mm wall
* 43.5 degree side-slope
* 1000/1500 kg of payload (4x4/6x6)
* 335 mm of clearance (lowest point when fully loaded)
* 110/100 km/h top speed(4x4/6x6)
* Full engine power available at 4 km/h
* M body type carries 10 people (4X4), 14 people (6x6)

22. It boggles the mind
I mean, in "The Day After", Jason Robards survived a direct nuclear hit in his 240 Wagon. The Volvo would be an ideal car for the apocalypse.

25. For the apocalypse? I have a bicycle.
But to really be prepared, I should probably get a tire patching kit.

And a gun, to protect the bicycle from being stolen by out-of-gas Hummer drivers.

34. Stanley Steamer
One EMP pulse and most all of the are boat anchors. Nevermind that spare parts much less a mechanic will be like next to impossible.

A simple open combustion boiler can run on almost any liquid fuel. Easy to fabricate replacement parts from various scrap. One olod rim plus a belt and you also have a portable power source for all sorts of stuff. Wood splitter, saw, grinder etc.

with a few modifications, of course:

if it's good enough for the Taliban in afghanistan (which is basically a post-apocalyptic world, when you think about it) I will take it. (this is a US version, apparently, in Afghanistan)
