14. Post surgery update
First, I'm very grateful for your thoughts and lounge vibes. :grouphug:
It really means so much.

I just got home after a very long day that started at 4:30. We had to arrive at 6 AM, so it was an extremely early start. He went into surgery at 8:30, and was done by 1:00. We were able to see him at 2:30. I just got home, and after a few minor problems with some nausea -- all is well. Now, we just have to wait and see if it worked.

On a secondary note. His roommate is a homeless, alcoholic that just got out of prison three months ago. He spent the first part of the week in the hospital for something or other, and just got out yesterday. Last night he was beaten with a pipe and is back in. I tried not to listen but it's hard with this poor dude a couple feet away. The social worker was in helping him fill out Medicaid forms. It's so sad -- this guy is only 38.

17. hospitals are full of folks like that sadly
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 09:23 PM by Southpawkicker
and i often get to see them about trying to get into treatment, but alas, the number who take anyone up on that is even more sadly low.

in fact, it starts to feel like an exercise in futility to go see people who the doctor seeing them orders a cd consult for.

oh and duh, glad your husband did well, and hope he gets out of the hospital soon

20. The curtain was drawn all afternoon and into night
They came in to take him for a cat scan early this evening. I was thinking that for this poor guy, the injury provided him with three hots and a cot, along with a plethora of pain meds for his head as well as his banged up body.

When the social worker asked him what his profession was, he said an artist and muralist, but that he has only worked a little under the table. He said he did all kinds of artwork in prison. I may reach out tomorrow. Sometimes these connections with people happen for a reason. Today I couldn't barge in when I had to focus on my husband.

19. I'm on Neurontin, too -- the generic form -- Gabapentin
For fucking hot flashes. And it's working like a charm. Even with all the stress of the surgery, I haven't had ONE hot flash in the past few days. A couple of weeks ago I was having 70 - 80 a day. They did a study at the hospital my doctor teaches at and I'm right on the cutting edge. No hormone replacement crap, and it helps my aches and pains to boot.

I do hope that you will not have to endure what my husband has had to. The first thing he said tonight was -- "Oh fuck, I hope I'll be able to move my neck more than this" Maybe he won't. They fused four vertebrae, for God's sake. He tried everything. He just couldn't take the pain any longer. It was driving him crazy. I just hope that this will give him the relief he so desperately wants.

22. yeah mine is generic
and i'm to start spreading the doses out

I hope it works too

Having worked in a pain clinic and knowing that the number one syndrome that we treated was "failed back" syndrome, I fear surgery.

However most of the surgeries have good outcomes I worked with the ones that didn't so it has skewed my view and made me leary as hell
