How come we don't eat banana peels?

We eat the skin of an apple, of cherries, hell even of a potato but not banana peels. If you watch the Food Channel you know that no dish is complete without the "zest" of an orange (which not only reaks of someone owning stock in a zester manufacturer but, be honest, it sounds a bit disgusting).

so why not a banana peel?
