I don't want to jinx myself, but I love my new job! (Happy post!)
For those who don't know, I'm a new nurse (at 35) and started working at my new job a couple of weeks ago. It's just an amazing floor- good nurse to patient ratios as well as a supportive team. I actually have time to take care of my patients' needs and provide education and teaching (which in this era of nursing shortages, a miracle). Lots of nurses have been there for many years which is a very good sign. I don't know how I got to be so fortunate, but it feels like my life is coming together in every possible way. I'm starting to feel (after years of a lot of stress, very hard work with little pay, and questioning how worth it this all was), "This is why I wanted to be a nurse. This is what I was meant to do." Just a very nice feeling.

p.s. Happy elementary graduation to my oldest son (who's giving a big speech today). I love you!!! :loveya:

Are you in a general practice?

5. I work in a large hospital.
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 03:20 PM by SarahBelle
Primarily, my unit is gyn surgery and oncology (gyn, uro-gyn, and breast) with some plastic surgery thrown in. Also, a tad of high risk antepartum.

3. I loved my short time as a nurse
Although I only had enough confidence in my ability to study to go to a 12-month LVN program, I really loved nursing school and working in a small island hospital.
After a while my lower back was not cooperating, so I started working for the chiropractor I went to.
I hope your hospital has those wonderful he-man patient lifting teams!

P.S. Congrats to your son! Mine just finished 6th grade, too!

9. I'm not on a heavy floor thankfully.
No intensive medical or orthopedic patients. (Had my share of that in a past job. I was a he-man!)

7. Personally,
I think you have to be a science geek who's anal retentive regarding detail, yet at the same time be sensitive and have excellent people skills.

:applause: Regarding the sensitive and people skills! You will make a great RN! My sister is an RN. She is ultra sensitive and has mega people skills. She was born to be a Nurse. I admire her so!

14. I hope not either.
One of the big reasons why I original choose this profession (as opposed to pursuing my master's in early childhood education for half!!! the income I now make) was that if I get sick of one part, I can always easily switch to something else- pysch nursing, visiting nurse, or hell, even pharmaceutical sales- and still be paid well.

I hope you find something else soon. You've been sounding pretty unhappy on the job front these days.

21. my cousin just did that
she was working as a hospital nurse (I think) and it was her first job out of school, she is older but just graduated, like you, and it was a complete nightmare, so she switched to a job in a psychiatric hospital and she loves it; she started at $30/hour and she is much happier with that situation.

Congrats on the great job. :)

18. That's awesome!
As a gal on the cusp (okay, like a year and a half out) of finishing school and entering the world of the *gasp!* gainfully employed, it's good to hear that one CAN enjoy the job they trained for!

Kudos to you for going for and getting it!

(and had to work our ass off in the process) appreciate it all even more. Keep up the great work yourself. :)

24. I had a girlfriend who was a nurse
I would come home and complain about a crappy day at work, ask her about hers and she's say something like, "I helped saved a three year old's life today".

You can't compete with that :hi:
