NEED HELP FROM CELL PHONE TECHIES! WHO IS CALLING ME?
My brother is a cell phone techie, but he didn't have much time to answer my questions tonight. I received two calls yesterday listed on my Verizon phone as "restricted."

Are these telemarketers? Are they from individuals? What?

The first one yielded about three seconds of some garbled noise in my voice mail, but the second one didn't end up in my voice mail at all.

The electronic records of these calls arrived the day after the calls were made, for some reason.

Does anyone have some insight into this?

2. WITH VERIZON YOU CAN *67 WHEN YOU CALL TO HAVE YOUR NUMBER....
LISTED AS "RESTRICTED." THE FIRST SOUNDS LIKE FAX SPAM. THE SECOND COULD BE ANYTHING. YOU WILL NEED A COURT ORDER TO OBTAIN INFO ABOUT THE CALLER.

4. Thank you!
So the caller was using Verizon service, yes? Is this likely to be a commercial phisher or an individual?

I'm just curious. My cell phone used to be a private place, but apparently it is not at this point.

7. Janx, I see you have no number. But... did you try *611 and discuss the problem with them?

13. No, I haven't yet. Should I do so?
Do I just punch *611?

15. Just called them.
They don't know either.

I guess I got spoiled with my cell phone; previously, only people I knew or expected to correspond with called me on the cell.

9. Most phone companies offer *67 services..
Most likely it is a machine dialing a sequence of numbers waiting for a response. I used to do this in 1995 on my computer to find computers to try and break into. It is really simple to do.

I wouldn't worry about it. It is like spam, it is going to happen. Someone could be stalking you, they could do the same thing on a land line.

11. I hate phishing and I hate stalking.

I liked the idea that my little cell phone was for people I really had to talk to and liked to talk to.

6. Nope. No number on caller ID.
That's what makes this so frustrating.

5. Do you have a telephone number listed in your Caller ID?
In other words, does it say RESTRICTED -- but you do have a telephone number showing?

If so, you can go to http://www.whocalled.us

Input the telephone number and at least you can see if others received the same call.

If not, you might try calling Verizon at *611 (that's the service number we call) and ask about this.

Good luck!

8. We are in Oregon with Verizon cell service. I assume you can make a call directly to Verizon...

as I explained in my other post.

*611.

At least, I think that's right.

10. No, Radio_Lady, and that's what's so frustrating.
There is no number associated with these calls at all.

Check your PM--I admire you!

12. 8:40 PM. I don't have a PM from you, Janx. Also, I just spoke to a
Verizon operator.

STAR-six-one-one (*611) will get you into Customer Service across the country.

You may have options in blocking RESTRICTED calls -- the woman whom I spoke with didn't have any real answers, but you should at least give it a whirl.

I think we were able to block calls on our landline telephone (which is through Comcast), but perhaps NOT on our cellphone.

Wish I could be of more help.

16. something
my sister's landline phone is an unlisted number, so when she calls me it shows up as "restricted #" I also have a friend who has an unlisted cell phone, and her calls to me also show up as "restricted #"

So do you know anyone whose numbers are unlisted? It might be them.

Strangely, to me at least, my sister and friend are both in the address book thing of my cell, yet when they call my phone doesn't identify the call as being from them.

I occasionally get (I think) collection agency calls, but they show up as 877 or 800 type numbers. This is a result of whoever had the number before me, because they always ask for the same person, but when I tell them it isn't that person's number any more, they do stop calling. Till the debt passes to a different collection agency, or something.

17. WEIRD!
And thanks for your reply. It's just the thought of someone calling me on my cell under the category "restricted"--well that's just strange. My cell is for people I regularly correspond with or people I need to talk to in a hurry.
