Palo Alto man's classic car recovered 31 years after it was stolen

By Kristina Peterson / Daily News Staff Writer
When Palo Alto police called retired police officer Ronald Leung on Thursday morning, he assumed they wanted him to join a bowling league.

And when they informed him they had found his stolen vehicle, he figured it was one of the cars leased from his Milpitas rental car company, A Rent A Heap Cheap.

"I didn't put it all together at first," Leung said.

Then it finally sank in. They had found that car - Leung's 1956 turquoise Thunderbird convertible. And incredibly, it was still in mint condition, 31 years - to the day - after it had been stolen.

"I feel great," Leung, 59, said roughly two hours after hearing of the convertible's return. "I'm still on a high."
