is there anyway that one could place certain words on ignore? |
|
so that threads pertaining to those *words* would automatically be hidden.
it is not so much a person i care to ignore as the topics that are chosen to be discussed.
would it be cost prohibitive to introduce such a feature?

Wildhorses, just do what I do.
When i see a word I don't like, I take some 'white out" and paint it over that word on my monitor. Sure, I buy a new monitor every three days, but it is well worth it. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
philboy

Do what I do. Just take a putty knife and scrape off the old white out.

Thank you for the kind advice.
Unfortunately, I cannot afford to buy a putty knife because every spare dime that I have goes towards the bi-weekly purchase of a new monitor.
Thanks again, and have a good day.

philboy

If you are talking about a word filter that would be used to block curse words for instance, I think they really work for about 5 minutes until someone figures out how to circumvent the filter.
For example...let's say that the "F" word really really offends you, and you just can't stand to see it. Well, if DU took it upon themselves to filter that word, people would naturally start typing it in different creative ways to get by the filter. People would start putting spaces in between the letters, spelling it with a "ph" instead of an "F", using the classic f^%$k type of thing, etc. From what I have seen at different sites, it is pretty much impossible to program in all possible variations that would make it so the word would never appear.
Now, if you are talking about words other than curse words...well, I guess the same thing might apply.
In any case, I would have to believe that any type of filtering device would be relatively expensive to install and maintain, and would indeed be essentially cost prohibitive, especially given that it probably wouldn't work very well.
I thought I would at least try to provide a serious response here...just my 2 cents.

24. no - it's okay when YOU and everyone else |

knows you're BS'ing.
The problem comes when:
A) people really think they're getting away with it; and/or B) they believe themselves.

I spend a reasonable amount of time in GD, and I don't know WHAT you are talking about! I mean, everyone knows that GD really stands for God Damnit and that "General Discussion" is just code words. The discussions there are of the highest caliber and require someone with a degree--B ull S hit, M ore S hit, or P iled h igher D eeper--in order to respond.
Let's face it--we're not ALL geniuses like so many of the GD posters are! We cannot ALL match their greatness! We can try, but we might not all succeed.

29. Some forums have "tags" for threads. |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 02:17 PM by philosophie_en_rose
For instance, Nader threads would be tagged "Nader." Then, I suppose you could ignore everything tagged "Nader."
I don't think this would work for every thread, but it might be an option.
Or, people can just use the hide thread function. :)

|
does gd have this feature? i am already using the hide thread feature and, i have 4 people on ignore. this might solve my problem but, in case it doesn't...this 'tag' might be the very thing i need.
