DUers! Give me a vacuum cleaner recommendation!
I want something under $175, cheaper the better of course. I look at it like this: we can get something cheap and it will last a year, or we can get something better than that. However, if it's not cheap and it only lasts a year, then there's no point.

Has anyone bought a vacuum lately? Do you recommend it? What would you get if you haven't? We don't have pets, so pet hair isn't an issue (allergies). We're in an apartment and we have no kids.

1. I bought a new one a year ago, but it was
way more than $175.

Have you checked out consumer reports? There's a lot of stuff on line-that's how I picked mine.

5. We want to save the really expensive one for when we have a house
We want to get a Dyson sometime, but right now there's no point.

12. Dyson doesn't get very good reviews. I read quite a bit
before I picked mine & all mentioned that Dyson wasn't really any better than a lot of others. One review said that Dyson owners are very loyal & don't ever take 'em on. They'll insist that Dysons rawck.

If you can afford it, I think it makes sense to buy it now, not for when you get a house. A good vacuum should last many, many years.

16. I own the Dyson "Animal" because we have pets...
...and I've been very satisfied. It's amazing how much hair those little critters can shed within a week or so.

pretty much any Hoover you get will be fine.

Fargo has now killed 4 vacuum cleaners. We bought an Orreck, but I hate it just as much as any of the bagless ones we had before because I can only do half a room before it starts to stink of burning rubber, then reprehensor has to pull it apart and take the hair out.

Whatever you do, don't get a Pyrenees, and you will never have to worry about what type of vacuum to buy. :D

3. I have an upright Dirt Devil that I like
I don't think we spent much more than that on it - found it at Target, I believe. Works well on both hardwood and rugs.

7. Only 2 ways to go:
I've had pretty good luck with Bissells (the ones at Target). Got the last one a year or so ago.

I also have a small wet/dry shop vac. They're cheaper and work SO much better. They are a little clunky to drag around the house but do an excellent job, and can also be used for liquid spills and to clean out the car. When the Bissell dies I'll probably just use the shop vac from that point on.

8. I bought a Bissell
Mosdel 3594-1 at Best Buy about 3 yrs ago when it was on clearance. I paid $120 back then. It's still going strong. Single man, no pets, 1 bdr apt. Highly recommended.
The 3596 / 3596-1 are the replacement models for the one I bought.

11. Finally had to retire my 20+ y/o Hoover and bought a Bissell
Did a LOT of research and the Bissell was rated just as highly as the Disson that cost twice as much. I got the "Healthy Home" model at Target for about $225.00 but less expensive models were also available. Research showed that Target had the lowest price of anybody.

All I can say is this vacuum sucks. I mean it really sucks. When I got it home I re vaced my persian rugs and they actually changed color! I could not believe the dirt this thing removed. It has a super long cord that allows me to clean my whole condo without re plugging and has a built in stretchy hose attachment that will stretch 30'. I am personally very satisfied with this purchase.

14. You might also check out vacuum cleaner stores
for good quality used or refurbished vacuums. Frequently you can get great machines for a great price. And good machines last forever. (Well almost.)

15. Bought a Royal Protege 7300

from Tuesday Morning on sale for $99 last year. Extra long cord, great suction, does a
great job picking up dog hair. So far absolutely no problems. Certainly worth checking out.
They apparently can use dirt devil bags, too.

17. Hoovers are great for basic, if you don't have a real hair shedder in the house
We live in a VERY dusty place. Havocdad got a Meile as he knew the company made great machines and he did some research to check they were still good. You don't have to buy top of the line for a great machine from them.

The very fine dust and grit we deal with is no match for the Meile's filtration system. Triple layer SEWN bags and a real HEPA filter. The suction from our little canister is amazing and also adjustable.

Due to the very hairy dog, I did switch wand from my older Hoover. It has a dust cup that traps larger matter, so those pricey Meile bags don't fill up with dog hair. THAT gets tossed in the trash. The dust and fine stuff gets to the bag. The exhaust is free of any particulates.

It cost around $300, not one of the top of the line models and I just LOVE it. It is also VERY quiet.

It REALLY sucks! ;) And my battle with the dust from outdoors is much easier.

He got a blue one... to match my eyes.

18. Yup...we had a Hoover "Wind Tunnel" upright for years...
the only drawback was a glitch in the on/off switch which required replacing yearly (2 dollar part, you can replace it yourself). I'm sure that glitch is fixed by now.

:D
