Technical question
I want to get a cable modem in my new condo, but the cable is run to only one spot in the living room. I don't think I can get cable run to the bedroom because the association might not let me drill through the wall there. Do I have another option?

2. How does that work?
Will the cable company hook that up for me? Will it work between two rooms?

3. I am assuming that you have a desktop computer?
I am used to using one with both a desktop and a laptop...but here goes...

First of all you techies in here, if this person has a desktop only...I am assuming you can get a wireless card put into a desktop, right?

If so, then this is basically how it works.

Your cable will run into your home into your living room. At that point, it will hook into a cable modem, which will be supplied by your internet company.

You will go out and buy a wireless router yourself. Ask for advice at the computer store on which type to get. You will hook your wireless router up to your cable modem. This will send the internet signal throughout your house.

You can then set-up your computer or computers anywhere in your home, and it will pick up the signal.

I think I have this right. Follow this thread, because someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Good luck.

4. Also....
your computer needs to have a wireless "card" in it to pick up the signal. Check to see that it does.

6. If it's a desktop PC then it may need a wireless network card
because it may not have one. If it's a laptop, there's a good chance it will already have a wireless adapter; if not then one can be bought to fit in the PCMCIA slot.

10. Also
I have a USB wireless adapter. It works great and I can connect it to my laptop and also my desktops with little hassle.

12. Yep, Wireless is the way to go but there are alternatives
You can run cable under the carpet.

You can run cable along the molding.

The reasons you may want to consider direct wire over wireless are speed and security. If you live in a condo then you are probably close to other wireless users. You can wind up broadcasting your internet access to the immediate neighborhood.

If you intend to do any serious downloading then the direct wire is the way you want to go. Although speeds on wireless are improving nothing beats a direct connection for speed yet.
