Any Interior Designers Here?
Or even amateurs that have a talent for colour?

My dilemma:

My bedroom faces north in my house and has very little natural sunlight. I want to paint the room, but am at a loss as to what colour! The furniture is mahogany with black accents. The carpet is white. Bear in mind that this room is naturally dark for most of the day and I want something that will brighten it up. It is currently painted a dull off-white colour that all contractors use when delivering a new house to buyers. I really need help here. I'm naturally inclined to blues or reds, but worry that those colours may be too dark for the room.

Can any of you help me out here?

1. You might try one of these products.
The first one you'd have to recreate your room before being able to see what it would look like in a different color. The second one, you just take a picture of the room, upload it, and click to add new colors.

5. That or TLC
with their many variations on "Trading Spaces." But don't copy anything Hilde does. That's all I know!

4. my wife's answer
go with a pale blue or lavender to work with the light floor, or a pale peach to work with the mohagany. And very light window sheers to let in as much light as possible.

7. I think pale peach would be a great choice. It would go well with
the mahogany, and add light and warmth to the room.

Another thing you might want to consider is adding more lighting through lamps and/or wall sconces.

9. I just had my dark hallway painted pale peach.
It worked really well and looks great. It's a warm color, as well as a brightener to the space.

6. What we did
We have a north-facing room with dark wood accents, too. We chose a cream color with a slight pinkish hue which seemed to warm up the room without darkening it.

8. Sunflower yellow
sort of warm and tuscan. I think it would work well with the furniture. But With the white carpet?

10. Peach would be great. My office is pale peach and I once had a peach north facing bedroom.
It's a great color for both men and women. It goes great with dark furniture and looks great with pastel and/or sheer curtains. White trim looks wonderful with the peach.

I also had a watermelon colored bathroom and a north facing dining living room which had very pale lavender walls with white wainscoat, chair rail and picture rail (it was an antebellum home with 12 foot high ceilings.) The kitchen was cream white with white trim.

You might consider the pale lavender (my walls were very pale) but the peach is warmer and looks great at night with accent lighting.

11. golden yellow. black and dark wood look great with yellows and golds

pick a warm tone of yellow, not a brassy one (meaning make sure there is more red than blue)

you could go pretty deep gold if the room is big enough and leave the ceiling white and paint any window frames or crown moldings white too so your carpet ties in

you could then use your red as an accent color

12. I was going to suggest the same.

I second this suggestion. Since the carpet is light buy some rugs in colors that tie it all together.
