An early publicity shot of "Skipper" Chuck Zink, "First Mate" Ellen and "Glumbo" along with some kids
outside of the WTVJ-TV 4 Miami, Florida TV studios. This photo was probably taken in the first week of January 1957.

that is.

What's so amazing about this picture is that -- besides me -- there was only one other woman on Miami television at the time. She was Jackie Pierce, who did a home or cooking show.

Aside from women who occasionally appeared on their own commercials (such as Mrs. Marco from Marco Shoes), all the other on-air people at the TV station were men. I think the only other women were in secretarial positions, and one woman was in management. Her name was Lee Waller.

the Original Pioneers of North Miami High School (Classes of 1955-56).
We had our 50th High School Reunion last October 2006 in Orlando, Florida.

I spent about two hours looking at that site last year and have it bookmarked if I want to look at it again.

Thanks for your comments.

like the old one.

Miami skyline in 1957

I'm still looking for the Mayflower Donut Shop's Biscayne Boulevard and their neon sign. I don't think it's anywhere on the web, but I could be wrong.

"As you wander on through life, brother
Whatever be your goal
Keep your eye upon the doughnut
And not upon the hole."

(Of course, that was BEFORE the introduction of MUNCHKINS -- DONUT HOLES.)

13. If you haven't already, you need to write a book
Toss in some of the great pictures you've shared and the stories. At a minimum, get all this on paper...I'd buy a copy.

15. Cobalt 1999, I appreciate the compliments and suggestion.
In the past thirty-five years, I've interviewed hundreds of "just folks" who have written their memoirs. Many of them are interesting -- even fascinating.

But getting a book published is a very difficult experience. First, it's almost impossible to get a literary agent. When you find one, he/she might take your money to "edit" your book and try to place it. That's about akin to finding a needle in a haystack. Legitimate agents only represent "paying" authors; so you have to have a successful book or books in order to get an agent. Ever seen a dog chasing his tail? That's like an author chasing HIS TALE!

Most memoirs are paid for by the author in something called "vanity" publishing. This can also be called "subsidized" publishing. You pay up front, and they create the book for you (a limited amount) and supposedly get it publicized.

Here's the catch: The large publishing houses only fork over FRONT MONEY when the book is by a known author. Even then, it's a crap shoot. Books that were considered to be excellent -- may often tank in the first week.

On my side, I receive so many books every week I have to pick and choose which to preview and which to pass on to others -- also which author might make a good guest for 20 - 40 minutes.

Naw, I've seen it all -- I'm kind of a "hot" person -- I like immediate feedback like on a blog or website. Maybe if I ever have time, I'll put together a DU reminiscence -- but my daughter, who turns 40 very shortly, is more interested in my producing a photo book with her pictures in it. Now THAT WILL BE A PROJECT!

In peace,

Radio Lady Ellen
