6. Prefer a Jamaican meatload to a pastie
Uses soft coco bread instead of the flaky pastry dough. Very yummy

but to my eye, that looks more like steak and kidney pudding than steak and kidney pie (if I'm allowed to be so pedantic).

14. My dad's side of the family came to the US from Cornwall in the 1860's...
...and brought their Cornish Pasties recipe with 'em. :D
They were tin miners and came over to work the hardrock mines in the Sierra Nevada's'. Apparently they were the popular meal of guys going down into the mines; they're better cold than hot, IMHO.

I don't know how long that recipe has been in the family but we have found English family church records going back to the 1600's.

Yummmmm...

:D

20. I will be glad to...
...as soon as "she-who-must-be-obeyed" gets home and can recite the recipe. It took until my grandmother was practically on her death-bed before she shared that recipe with my wife. She has it tucked safely in her memory.

I, unfortuneatly, do not cook but only get to enjoy the results and the clean-up. :D

I'll post it in a day or two.

23. I will be glad to PM it to you...
everyone who has eaten them loves 'em. There is something very cool about having an old recipe passed along.

Got to warn you, though: The crust and filling list is complete, but this has always been passed along with a healthy amount of "pinch of" when it comes to measurements, as far as I recall...

:D

19. They were designed for miners.
The point being that come lunch time, the miner could hold the fringed edge of pastry and eat the contents - their hands being too dirty to eat something they were holding. All rather cunning if you ask me.

35. Miners in the Upper Michigan iron mines had them also
my dad's family is from that area. Although its mosltly Finnish and French Canadian immigrants, the pasties are similar. My grandmother made some great ones. My dad made my mother learn the recipe. Yummy stuff, especially with ketchup.

24. Natchitoches Meat Pie! (pronounced nak'-a-tish)

Natchitoches Meat Pies
PREP TIME: 1-1/2 Hours
SERVES: 4

INGREDIENTS:

½ pound ground meat
½ pound ground pork
½ cup cooking oil
½ cup chopped onions
½ cup chopped celery
¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
¼ cup chopped red bell pepper
1 tbsp diced garlic
2 cups beef stock (see recipe)
2 9-inch pie shells
1 egg
½ cup water
salt and cracked black pepper to taste
METHOD:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a heavy-bottomed sauté pan, heat oil over medium high heat. Sauté beef and pork until golden brown, stirring constantly, until all liquid has evaporated. Add onions, celery, bell peppers and garlic. Sauté three to five minutes or until vegetables are wilted. This should cook slowly for about one hour, adding beef stock to mixture to prevent sticking. Season to taste using salt and pepper. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Roll pie dough into circles and cut into halves. Spoon a generous portion of the cooked meat mixture into the pie shells. Brush a little egg-wash around the edge of the shell, fold over and press the edges with a fork similar to apple turnover. Place on a greased cookie sheet or pan. Make small slits in dough to vent steam, egg-wash entire pie and bake thirty minutes at 400 degrees. Pie may also be deep-fried.

25. When I was last in London, we visited a nice little pub
The waitress said the day's special was a "steak and owl pie." That set me back for a moment, till I realized it was "ale," not "owl." She was from New Zealand, whaddaya expect? BTW, it was absolutely delicious.

32. Chicken pot, chicken pot, chicken pot pie!
The first Slow Donnie episode from Just Shoot Me guest staring David Cross about a lazy man pretending to be mentally disabled so his family would cater to his needs and he wouldn't have to find a job.

Like "Rescue Me", this episode was written and directed by creator Steve Levitan. Levitan had been pitching this idea to his staff for quite some time. They rejected the idea as being too potentially offensive. Only when someone came up with the idea of having David Cross play the character was it approved. They were familiar with Cross, and realized he was possibly the only person who could portray this character in both a humorous and non-offensive way. In fact, it was agreed that the episode would be done if and only if they could get Cross for the role. They had to wait several months for Cross to come free of some commitments, but when he finally did and agreed to play the part, the show was promptly filmed.
