One more dumb question: accessing shared hard drive on networked computer |
|
I barely got any sleep last night trying to set this up so at this point I'm even slower than usual.
Both my computers are networked, and I can access the internet from both, but the older PC's hard drive is shared. I want to move a few of my old files but I can't figure out how to access it in XP (new comp has XP, older ME).
on Windows ME it was easier, but now the shared drive doesn't show anywhere. I clicked on "My Network Places" and I see the NIC cards and ISP, but that's all. What am I missing?
thanks in advance,

1. Did you give your network a name? |
|
You need a name for your network, and need to enter that name onto each computer.
Then each computer needs it's own name.
Now, they should be able to see each other.
Then - and you probably have this much done already - give the drive or folder you want to share a name, go the other computer, and grab it, and make it a drive on that computer.
But you have to have that network name, and it has to be spelled the exact same way on each computer.

2. Have you set up a 'workgroup'? |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 09:14 PM by GAspnes
The XP system probably set up a workgroup, named "MSHOME".
The ME system used to share its drives promiscuously -- newer Windows versions require naming the computer, including it in a workgroup and then sharing the drive explicitly before it can be 'seen' on the network by other computers in the same workgroup.
If there isn't a choice for MSHOME under My Network Places, then you need to set up a workgroup and then share the drive on the ME system.
on edit: damn, Rabrrr, you not only beat me to it, your explanation is better.

and rabrrrrrr has 6 'r's - though your use of "workgroup" might be more accurate than "network", since I think that's what MS calls it, but I'm too lazy to actually move my mouse over and find out for sure.

I had to install a NetBEUI protocol before mine would work.
