Wow... Yoko is such a sweet lady |
|
watching Larry King. He asked her and Olivia Harrison if they feel the presence of their husbands, and Yoko looked at Olivia and said "yes, sometimes it's hard for us, isn't it?"
I'll never understand the hatred for her. she's spent a lifetime agitating for peace and love, and she's been a class act the whole time.

One must have a certain RESPECT for the tastes of others; I'm certain there are people here who think poorly of Bo Diddly. I am not one of them, but I'm certain they exist.
One of the reasons why polemics are seldom respected. I try to remember to preface MY opinion with IN MY OPINION.
In YOUR opinion "Her art sucks, her protests suck, her music sucks"...not a universal opinion, but yours.

Or are you just offended that I said her work "sucks?" I assumed it was obvious that's just an opinion. If that still seems offensive, perhaps staging a bed-in will change my mind.

Stated as fact, not opinion.
Just holding out for a little common courtesy, that's all. If you state this as fact, you cast aspersion on anyone who believes differently.
I have recently had that made very clear to me. I accept and learn.

This isn't a high school debate--we're presumably adults. Do we need to preface every opinion with "in my opinion?" I don't believe that's necessary.

I think what I took issue with was your saying Paul was basically a drone in the Beatles whose place could have been filled by a talented session musician or somesuch. Usually when we encounter a statement like that which is so counter to what we ourselves think, it seems obvious that ours must be somehow an "empirical" opinion. We just need to explain, and people will change their minds. :D Total crap of course. The urge is so strong that I still like to think my lapse comes closer to viability (though it isn't at all viable) just because I can't imagine anyone listening to a great McCartney track and then a great Hollies or Pretty Things or Merry-Go-Round song could fail to declare McCartney as the most talented of the group. But yeah, I did do essentially the same thing.

I'm trying very hard to ease my preachy-ass tendancies lately. IN MY OPINION McCartney did some interesting things, but IN MY OPINION he got a little repetitious and formulaic: HIS OWN formula, but IN MY OPINION anything can get old if it sounds too similar.
I DO wish he'd lose the cutesy hang-dog look he's had on his publicity and posters for the last eternity. Makes him a little hard to take seriously. That Free Concert poster IN MY OPINION was an example of this.
Who's "Merry go Round"?

22. I saw her in concert at the SF Warfield |
|
in the late 80's. One of the finest shows I've ever attended, No visible security, she sat on the stage reminised, accepted gifts from audience members, sang a bunch of her songs. Her back up band was comprised of some of the session guys they used on their albums. I always liked her stuff but I must say hearing it in person is very different than listening to the recordings. Her voice and range are stunning. she didn't suck that night.
her shit shaped cookies are both funny and tasty.

31. I think the hatred comes from |
|
the idea that she was the reason the Beatles broke up, which I think isn't entirely true or entirely false, either. She was definitely part of the reason when you consider that her appearance in John's life caused him to lose much of his interest in the group. Also, he was so close to her and never wanted to be apart from her, which led to things like her taking part (including offering unwanted criticism) in the Beatles' recording sessions from the "White Album" on, breaking an unofficial rule among the members that their wives/girlfriends weren't to take part in sessions. However, that's just one of those things that was going to happen it seems to me; John losing interest in the Beatles because he became more interested in Yoko can't really be considered her fault. And obviously there were other, more business-related reasons behind the Beatles' break-up as well.
As for Yoko, I have mixed feelings about her based on different things I know about her, but maybe I've just read too many Beatles biographies by authors who weren't too big on her!

33. Taste put forth as FACT, opinion put forth as TRUTH, |
|
All you have to do is scan the thread.
Yoko Ono is respected by an AMAZING percentage of the rest of the world. That she is "dissed" a lot in this hemisphere (the northern part of it) is a demonstration of regional "taste" passed as FACT. I don't like Paul McCartney's work: that is MY OPINION, and if I frame it that way, I'm entitled to it. If I say his work is (insert polemic here) and anyone who doesn't believe as I do is wrong and stupid, then I am guilty of putting forth my OPINION as FACT; a logical fallacy.
I don't adore anyone's entire body of work, but Yoko Ono has done many admirable things in the world of art and social protest.

If so, I feel like I make it pretty clear in my post the statements that are my opinions or impressions, and the facts I mention regarding her role in the Beatles' break-up are simply based on what I've read about the group.
(If your post isn't in response to mine and is just meant to be a general assessment of the thread, please disregard my response.)

36. How many people are listening to a Yoko Ono song right now? How many to a McCartney tune? |
|
Doesn't prove Paul is better any more than Yoko being "respected" (interesting choice of words :P) by many has anything to do with proving that she deserves to be liked. That's the fallacy of rating artists merely by popular acceptance and respect, in an attempt to make one's own opinion appear somehow more grounded in fact. It's a cheat--tastes are tastes. Like what you like. Don't turn it into an imaginary factional struggle where you pretend the opinions of others are an attempt to oppress you and your personal, deeply-felt views on art and the world in general.

"Her art sucks, her protests suck, her music sucks"
sounds like a polemic to me. As I said, I've had that made clear to me lately, and I'm trying to express my "tastes" as just that, MY tastes.
You don't have to subscribe to them, and you don't have to piss on them.
