Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 09:20 AM by Breeze54
It's 10 AM and it's already 83 degree's and rising...

The humidity is starting to get to me.

It's supposed to reach 105 F today and the humidity

will be near 70%, which is oppressive.

I already cooked tonights dinner at 5 AM today!

I roasted a chicken, boiled red potato's and made potato salad

and also macaroni salad and 2.5 doz. M & M cookies!!

I did two loads of wash and vacumned

all in an attempt to beat the higher rates at peak usage hours between 10 AM to 4 PM.

It's to hot to sit outside and there's no real shade near me.

Maybe I should go to the mall and stay cool there until this afternoon.

I just paid off a huge electric bill, so I don't want to run up the bill again.

Do you think it's to early to turn on the AC?

1. 50 years ago everyone lived without it.
I'm in Florida and I usually go the entire summer without. Ceiling fans are required though.

3. It's hotter than Satan's belt buckle around here, too.
AC typically takes more power... Fans don't really cool the air as much as circulate it and
when it gets this hot all a fan does is circulate hot air... (Much like Fawx Noise).

You could also go to a movie, it's cool there.

7. A movie is a great idea! I didn't
think of that! Thanks! I don't really like theaters but...

I only have a 6000 BTU unit in my bedroom window.

So, I'd only be cooling the one room.

But maybe if I go to a movie at noon, it would save some costs.

Good thinking! ;) Thanks!

I don't even care what the movie is sometimes.

34. The last 'dollar theater' near me, closed last year.
I was really upset about it and they leveled it to the ground. :(

I loved going to that old theater. *sigh*

Cheap rates and the movies were fairly new too!

4. It's pretty goddamned hot here, in MAINE, fer chrissakes.
Supposed to be in the 90s today, and it was the same yesterday. Pretty bad humidity, too. I'm just out of the range of influence the ocean has on temperatures, so it's really fuckin' hot here. There are three A/Cs in this house, and every one of them is on and blasting 68 or 70. I say, if you're hot, put the damned A/C on. :)

10. I hear that neighbor!
I'm in MA and invariably, my town always is in the top five, for the highest temps!

I'm just out of range of those ocean breezes too. :(

I hear the rest of the week, after today, will be in the 70's!! Yeah!!

I think I'll turn it on for a little while.

It's really uncomfortable on the 2nd floor, right now, even with the fan and all the windows open.

Stay cool!! :hi:

12. 68 to 70! I knew you were a mall rat.
At home those suckers shouldn't be set that low unless your parents love to burn money.
:wow:

Mainers can't stand the heat. It's a fact. Any chance you can get to a pool or the beach?

19. We Keep Our Thermostat Between 75-78 In Florida
At 68 it would never turn off and ultimately stop working...

Central Air Conditioners by regulation in Florida only have to cool the air by 20 degrees... Do the math with the Florida temperatures... Of course I guess you can get a more powerful a c...

23. I don't set them; my parents do.
My mom has a cold fetish, and she loves to be so cold that she gets goosebumps, especially at night while sleeping. When we leave the house, we put them on about 72. Mostly this is so our bird doesn't die on us; she might have African genes, but they can't take very large swings in temperature in either direction, so we have to keep the temps the same inside year-round (about 72 or so).

I hate the mall, by the way. :P

5. If it's that hot and humid, and you're fatigued, run it.
Even set at 78, it'll take the humidity and stickiness out of the air. When it gets really humid my wife has trouble breathing, so I run the AC. It's also essential for our dogs, since bully breeds often don't take heat well.

Todd in Cheesecurdistan, who doesn't do so well in the humidity either

11. I usually keep it at 78 too!
The heat, if dry, doesn't bother me to much.

It's the humidity that's the killer.

And I hate the stickiness. Blah....

I'll be turning it on in a few minutes. ;)

9. Draw the curtains and shades.
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 09:34 AM by Gormy Cuss
Turn on the AC but set it to a high temperature like 80 degrees. This will slow down the rate at which the house heats up without driving your electric bill into the stratosphere. Supplement with fans only in occupied rooms. Then go to the mall this afternoon.

I lived in Boston for years without AC. I know what it's like. Just by closing off the hot air outside during the heat of the day and minimizing the buildup from the sun streaming through the windows it was tolerable to sleep with a fan at night on all but the hottest nights. An AC would have been handy for the 5-10 days each summer when it's crazily humid and hot.

with the rising of the sun and I'm about to close them on the west side
of the house. That side gets the brunt of the sun until it sets at 8 pm or so.
I had the windows open because I had the oven on early this morning.
But it just started getting really uncomfortable about 30 mins. ago.
Today is one of those 5 - 10 days!! ;) I'm afraid I'll spend $$ at the mall! :P

PS>

When I posted this topic, it was 83 degree's and it's now 88! Temp. rising rapidly!

16. Fans do nothing for humidity -- run the AC
Most AC units are pretty energy efficient, whether window units or heat pumps systems.

Humidity makes me miserable: tired, headachey, etc.

He has to work later on, so I'll let him sleep.

27. I'm trying to acclimatize.
Before I moved last year, I lived in a building where they pushed the air conditioning on you. In the new place, it's a window unit and I have to pay for the electric. So far, I've been able to sleep comfortably with a fan. Though there are energy hogs who've had AC running since April, and it hasn't been hot. Our laundry room houses all the electric meters. Even in the winter, theirs are spinning like tops, while mine moves glacially.

I hate using the AC but sometimes you just got to do what you have to do!
I don't run it all day and night, everyday anyway. My son just installed
it two days ago for me, in preparation for today's high temps. ;)

31. Less energy with a fan.
Last summer, I used the AC just for sleeping. So far I'm able to keep it off. But I also like the heat. I used to work in the Negev desert (third hottest spot on the planet) with only a tiny fan. Of course, you couldn't sleep until winter.

I discovered something else. The doors on the flats are crap. Air flows around them as if they were open. Since I'm located at the bottom of the stairwell, I think I'm getting some of their cool air around my crappy door.

use that at night, just to get fresh air. I can't sleep in the heat and humidity.

It's just to uncomfortable.

We're officially under a heat advisory right now until 9 PM.

I just did a quick run to the store and it had to be 130 degree's inside my car.

It's 94 degree's and the sun is a scorcher today. I'm staying inside!

I literally, couldn't put my hands around the steering wheel. Two finger driving. ;)
