5. according to the radio
he was with the bush junta. They made a distinct point of mentioning it, as if he were planning on drawing support from new england fans or something.

7. a moment in playoff history for Tom Bradley
I curse him to remember viscerally the hit that Lawrence Taylor levied upon Joe Montana in the 1986 NFC playoffs... where the score ended up like 49 to 7... flip flip.. "Oh... is this way UP?" Like in batman, bash, boom, sock, boffo!! Bradley is going to suffer greatly in the name of justice in this coming contest.

8. Um, some perspective is in order...
Yeah, ok, I'm biased here...

a) Just because someone accepts an invitation by the First Lady doesn't mean they support the President's policies. Look, most people in America aren't as rabidly partisan as we are - most people WOULD accept such an invitation unless they really, really hated said President. The same goes for entertainers at Presidential functions - just because you perform for the President doesn't mean you endorse his policies. Some people put manners and class above politics. (I'm not saying that's always appropriate in every situation...)

Besides, what would you have Brady do, refuse the invite? The media shitstorm would be an enormous distraction during the time when Brady and the Pats are supposed to be preparing for the big game.

b) Brady is alleged to be a "moderate Democrat". He was supposed to host a fund raiser for John Kerry at one point - it's unclear whether it happened or not (see the thread in LBN). Until he starts spouting right wing talking points I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

c) There are probably Republicans on both teams. You guys prepared to not watch the Superbowl at all if one of the Panthers contributes $$$ to the GOP?

13. Fair enough...
I guess my point was that it's kind of silly for people to get their dander up just because someone attends the SOTU Address as a Guest of the First Lady, when their personal politics are unclear. Did any Republican athletes ever boycott meeting President Clinton when their teams won the championship? I don't recall it happening. It's a manners/class thing - you get an invite like that, you accept graciously, even if you don't much care for the hosts...

for rape. A black eye on the Packers that won't go away. What a scumbag.

16. Point noted, I'd forgotten about him...
Yeah, Chmura was an asshole. But he was the only one, IIRC, most athletes don't make a big deal about it, if for no other reason than they probably don't want to jeopardize their endorsement contracts.

17. Well, I think they'd want to meet the president, even if they disagreed...
with him or her, in general. You only get so many chances to see the White House, after all.

Anyway, in high school and college, I felt privileged to get to meet and talk with Barry Goldwater and John McCain, even though I disagree with them on, well, many, many things. The current resident is probably the only president in my lifetime where I would definitely think seriously about turning down the invite. And that's not a knock on Brady. At his age, I'm sure I would have gone.

18. Exactly...
It personally makes my skin crawl, as a Patriots fan, that the BFEE is pestering our quarterback when he should be preparing for the big game. And maybe the GOP IS trying to woo Brady and/or Patriots/NFL fans, the prospect of which also gives me the creeps. But if Brady refused the media would be all over him and the Pats would be more likely to lose because of the distractions. And I agree that he might just think its cool to see the speech and meet the First Lady without thinking too hard about the politics....

When I was in high school I and some other students got an award from our GOP governor - we went to the State House for a brief speech and a photo op. To this day I'm surprised that my staunchly Democratic parents have a photo up on their wall of me shaking hands with Mr. Olympia Snowe...

12. I heard that Brady was hosting a Kerry fundraiser also
he is from the Bay Area originally-not exactly a Republican stronghold...

I just hope his appearance at the SOTU doesn't jinx the Pats!

20. Supporting?
So, because he was there, he is "supporting" Bush? How exactly do you draw that conclusion? Does Ted Kennedy support Bush? After all, he was there.

22. he was used as a support prop
and new england will lose.

He represented all those drugged up athletes who are "examples" as pointed out in the speech... that one of those examples showed up to be exactly that does not bode well for them.

You would not show up to support them if you were asked, would you?

Your rude response is out of line, and i won't respond in kind. Clearly you're defending supporting the scumbags... the other folks there are PAID to show up, he was a voluntary supporter.

New england will lose, because it is now the rule of justice. The king's champion must go down.

24. From today's Boston Globe...
Boston Globe article

Brady, the Patriots quarterback who's already won one Super Bowl and is headed to another championship game next month, was among 29 special guests last night of first lady Laura Bush. Brady was invited to a reception at the White House and was among a select group chosen to watch the president's speech live in the House chamber....

...Brady was picked because he and his teammates ''have made an impact in their community by hosting a sports camp for local youth,'' said White House spokesman Kenneth Lisaius...

...''It's great to see Tom Brady get the recognition he deserves for an outstanding season,'' said Representative Marty Meehan, a Lowell Democrat and longtime season ticket-holder.
