3. I was dilated at a 2 for over a week.
When I finally went into labor I never made it past a 5. (Yep, c-section here.)

A friend went from nothing at a doctor's appointment two days before to having her baby in her husband's truck. She was in labor for a total of 90 minutes, they live way out in the country and he got the truck stuck in mud. They were 5 miles from the hospital when they had to pull over.

Dude, this really depends on your wife and on what the doctor says.

6. the doctor said that *she* should stay off the boat.
he didn't say anything about me staying off the boat :D

but really, I can get home from fishing in less than an hour, so I'm thinking it's probably ok. :P

9. I wasn't allowed to be more than 35 minutes from my
doctor at any time, just in case.

Just saying...think about it. If she's that close at least have a family member or a close friend stay with her.

17. It would suck to rush back from a fishing trip,
full of beer and sun, and then have to stay awake for a day or two while she's in labor.

You're best bet is to stick around and have you both relax. Once the baby is born you can take him/her fishing with you. I took my daughter to the beach at six weeks and took her out into the water.

12. Thank you.
I brought up the example of a friend and how fast labor and delivery can be. If she's that close to going into labor he shouldn't be going somewhere for pleasure.

Business is another deal altogether. If you don't have a choice it's understandable.

we went shopping and had lunch at Paneras.
She had the baby at 11:40 that night.
