Watched eight White Stripes videos last night. Nope. Still don't get it.
Don't like the drummer, don't like Jack's voice, and their songs . . . they just do nothin' fo' me man.

Critics from sun-up to sun-down and their five-star reviews be damned, I'm just going to accept the fact that it's not my dance and get on with it. One more "if you don't like them, you're simply not in the know" band that I ain't in the know about, I guess.

1. Disregard the White Stripes and go directly to the Raconteurs.
Much, much better music. I never thought I'd like Jack White in any capacity, but the Raconteurs' music is outstanding.

6. The Raconteurs???
If I ever, ever hear that "Steady as she goes" crap one more time, I will, as Morrissey put it, "...reflect and plan a mass murder." Horrible, horrible song.

7. Lots of other good songs on that album though
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 04:50 PM by Connonym
I'm hoping they put out another. Jack White (I keep wanting to call him Jack Black) seems pretty flippin' prolific so my fingers are crossed.

The Raconteurs are less raw sounding than the White Stripes. I love 'em both personally.

8. Have you listened to the entire CD?
If not, you might want to withhold judgment until you do.

16. I listened to as much of it as I can tolerate....
....a guy I work with loves them, and played the CD a few times. I simply cannot tolerate that singers voice.

2. Yeah, I have problems with the drummer too. She is always behind the beat
I need to hear more apparantly, as everyone else seems to love them.

I have heard some Raconteurs and liked that better.

with "Ball and Biscuit"

4. I feel that way about the Black-Eyed Peas
Don't get it - they always sound to me like they're singing three different songs. Like cats mating.

13. There's only one Black-Eyed Peas song that I like.
"Let's Get It Started." (Okay, technically, it's "Let's Get Retarded," but casinos don't like it when we play that version.) My band was doing it before I joined, and we've since tried at least two more of their tunes, but "Started" was the only one that stayed in the playlist.

5. My same thoughts on Bob Dylan
For the longest time I thought I just hadn't heard the right tracks. 100 tracks later and no change in my opinion. I'll be polite and say that his music just doesn't appeal to my tastes.

10. He's the best musician ever, except for the whole 'not being able to play guitar, harmonica or sing'
part

12. Got some news for you...NOBODY likes Bob Dylan as a performer.
As a songwriter, he's freakin' brilliant.

11. They're just another novelty act..
"Oh, cool! They don't have a bassist!.. just guitar and drums!"
"Hey! That video is all legos!"
"So, is she his sister or his ex-wife???"
"His guitar tone is soooo 'Retro' *swoon* "

18. 10 years and 6 critically acclaimed CDs I don't think it's just a novelty
Feel free to not like it but to dismiss it as a novelty is, I think, pretty groundless. God knows there's plenty of music that other people listen to that I think is crap and plenty of other people who think the White Stripes kick ass. Lovely thing about the world is that we have variety.

19. That's what they tell me. That's what I'm seein'.
Unfortunately, I don't think what she's doing can be construed as "drumming" so much.

23. But if you live in a small town w/ lots of
ultra conservative and fundie types "Icky Thump" is a great song to blast in your car.

Do it while driving by their businesses and their heads will blow up. For that reason alone it should be played and played often.

20. Well, *I* like them.
With so much modern "music" sounding like pre-processed corporate crap, it is such a relief to have a free spirit like Jack White around. He supplies the elements that are missing in action these days: creativity and conviction. I love the raw edges - it reminds me of what rock music was supposed to be about before the bean counters took over.

I can understand if you don't like his voice. But you gotta love his attitude!

21. I don't get it either, but I WANT to get it...
Honestly, in theory I'm so fucking in favor of an eccentric 2 person garage band with no bassist and a drummer who can't play and who dress in matching clothing and play music derived from any number of great bands/artists who I love, and who are wildly successful in one of the most wretched musical eras in the history of recorded music.

But I just can't back their music. It does absolutely nothing for me. It just makes me want to pull out my Flat Duo Jets, Gibson Brothers, Honeymoon Killers, Pussy Galore, JSBX, Gories, and Detroit Cobras albums.

22. Many people think that the White Stripes ripped off their act from the Flat Duo Jets.
A good two-person band with a bassist and a drummer that CAN play would be Big Business. Remember that name, because they might end up big (they're opening for Tool this summer/fall, so they might gain some fans like Isis did).

24. I love Big Business but they're completely different....
..from the White Stripes and the Flat Duo Jets.

Also I'm assuming if you're into BB then you're also into Karp, which is their previous band?
