1. It's supposed to be in the ninth, but it had to take a number.
It's still waiting in the eighth circle, even though it didn't have all its documents.

that I need a smog check. To the tune of another $60.00!

God damn, you think the cost of living isn't high enough already, then they make you spend money on stupid shit before you spend money on fucking license plates.

you need that if your car's older than a certain model year. California emission standards and all that.

I somehow managed to find out about that little requirement, but it took me at least 5 trips to the DMV to get my plates and driver's license.

A word of warning: they require either a passport or your ACTUAL birth certificate, complete with official seal.

Also, you have to take the written test. And I think you have to get a thumb print taken...oh, and an eye test...

:spank:

On edit: the ONLY way to survive all of this torture is to make an appointment on the DMV website. That way, you only have to wait an hour or so instead of ALLFRICKINGDAYLONG. :grr:

15. I already had my CA DL, just needed to switch the registration for my car
My tabs on my MN plates expire in September. And since I was down at the damn DMV to get a duplicate DL (I lost my purse), I figured I would get the plates as well. But I can't get the plates because I need the fucking smog check. Boy oh boy does the state ever find ways for people to spend money, as if getting the car titled in CA did not cost enough.

check is pretty much the same thing.

26. Minnesota used to do that too
But the smog check was part of the annual fees for renewing auto registration.

I am finding a range of prices from 49.00 to 65.00 to do the damn smog check. Used to be a $10 fee on top of the registration IIRC.

I think you can get the smog check cheaper than $60 though. Most service stations offer the service and have varying prices. I think I spent $45, so check around!

Didn't any paperwork say you needed that? Though I do agree a simple explanation of the steps you needed to follow would have been nice. DMV workers are notorious for not giving a shit - I try to avoid the DMV like the freaking plague.

On the brighter side - you still live in the coolest state in the union ;-)

the Va. DMV headquarters here in Richmond. The last time I was in there-to renew my license- I didn't even sit down before my number came up.

I am told by friends elsewhere that this is not the norm. I have never waited more than 15 minutes.

Great cafeteria with a better than average salad bar too.

Of course make sure you go to the one on Rt 13 and not Airport Road.

I had my car inspected and when I was done I paid and received my sticker through a drive through window. It was the last Wednesday before the end of the month (only day of the week they're open at nights) and I got through all of that in less than 30 minutes.

All of your toll dollars have aid our state well

23. I worked at the DMV 20+ years ago
There was only one place to go in Manhattan at the time. The lines WERE horrendous. For a while we opened at 7:30 to accomodate people (and what a joy getting there at 7:15 for a non-morning person that was.)

However, thre was an information booth with documents that clearly stated what was acceptable ID. IIRC there were also overhead signs. If you got to my booth without the documents or especially if you failed the eye test I'd give you a pass to cut the line when you came back.

I was tough but fair. If I caught you standing on line memorizing the eye test or asking for help, I'd have you read it backwards. If you didn't speak English you could write the symbols on paper.

You wouldn't BELIEVE the cheating that occured. I swear, the entire nation of Senegal shared one passport. Everybody was born January 1st. They were all named Mamadou. People stole the stamps for our learners permits When I caught them I'd confiscate them but not say why to the driving schools who brought them in. They knew they were phony. The easiest phony one to spot was the one where "learner's permit" was spelled "learnes pemit" People cheated on the written test too. We'd cut up the Chinese ones and put them in different orders to prevent rampant cheating. We tried it with the Korean ones but it wasn't necessary after a while, they got them right even when cut up so they legitimately knew their stuff. Other languages weren't such a problem, you could spot cheating by looking at what they were doing. The Chinese were coached by the driving schools though.

Now there are at least 2 more Manhattan offices, they tell you how long you have to wait, thre are seats, you just wait till your number is called, still up to an hour but in comfort. They no longer require proof of address. They just won't forward it or ( I think) send it to a post office box. And licenses are good for 8 years or more instead of 4. I don't know how registering a car is but the drivers license portion is a lot easier.

The people on line weren't angels either. One of my supervisors was punched in the face. She wasn't abusive to people. That's when they finally installed plexiglass between us and the public. Before anyone could reach in and take your stuff including money.

30. Y'gotta understand, New Resident
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, there were 36,871,422,655,316,912 motor vehicles registered in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties alone. Just the revenue from the coffee machines at DMV offices in those counties accounts for 87.2 percent of the entire Kollyforniya budget each year — excluding CalTrans, which operates on an annual budget of $47.73*, which explains why every freeway in the state is a parking lot.

*This figure does not take into account an ancillary budget of some $97 kajillion earmarked for changing all freeway signs in SoCal to include the word "The."
