Five hikers died in the French Alps after one man in the group seemed to have slipped and fallen, dragging the rest of the roped party along with him, officials said on Thursday.

The accident near the village of La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar in south-eastern France occurred on Wednesday afternoon as the group was trying to climb the 3,400m-high Cime du Vallon summit, local officials said.

"The conditions were difficult, the snow was frozen," mayor Jean-Claude Catelan told LCI television.
