Maybe alligators do better in backyards......
Alligator Found in Reston Backyard
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, June 28, 2007; 2:54 PM

New York may have alligators in the sewers, but Reston's got them in the backyard.

Fairfax County animal control officers found a real, live alligator on Monday after a Reston resident spotted it in the yard of a home in the 1800 block of Dasher Lane, police said. The reptile was healthy and not injured.

Animal control officials said in a news release that the alligator was a juvenile, about 2 feet 6 inches long, weighing about 5 pounds. They carefully rounded it up and took it to the animal shelter. The alligator will be transferred to a licensed facility that can provide it with proper care.

Fairfax County ordinances prohibit the keeping of any wild or exotic animals, including alligators, crocodiles, caimans and gavials.

This might not be unusual in Florida, and it wasn't big all things considered but up here I would be very shocked if I found a gator in my yard:)
