Non loopy update post: I still have all of my teeth |
|
I got to the oral surgeon's, had my x rays and consult and then they finally showed me what the bill would be. Last time I handed somebody that much money in one day, I got a pretty decent used car out of it. So I asked what it'd be to only take out the wisdom tooth that is causing me pain- the now rather huffy office girl stomps off, then comes back fifteen minutes later (I watched the time) to inform me that would be somewhere around $950.
So I paid for my x ray and "consult" (this consisted of the dentist asking me if I had allergies when I'd already wrote them in my history, then spending about 30 seconds looking in my mouth with a little mirror and another thirty seconds or so at my $160 x ray :grr: to confirm that, yes, I do indeed have wisdom teeth and no, there isn't enough room for them. I figure that on a dollars per second basis, she's slightly more expensive than a manned space mission.) and went back to my regular dentist's office to see if they could refer me to somebody whose rates were a bit less obscene. A few phone calls later, I have an appointment at a different office next thursday, the office staff there sounds a million times nicer and more helpful, and they actually told me up front what their very reasonable rates are. Even in the worst case scenario (sideways impacted molars rigged up with c4 and digital clocks or something) they would still be cheaper than this other office, and in my case they cost about half.
So next week I have my consult, and soon after that my teeth will once again lack wisdom. With luck someday soon I'll have my very own artfully created and moderately expensive retromolar gap. :D

I am sorry it is necessary, if it wasn't I'd say don't do it. I had three root canals when I was 26 that have messed up my hearing and otherwise given me nothing but trouble, and it turns out I did not even need them. I am glad you found a more reasonable dentist.

I loved how I dropped in there when I first moved to Texas and was presented with a list of 7 things that needed to be done to my teeth and an estimate of over $2500. NOT BLOODY LIKELY! I'm sure you're dreading it, but I'm glad you found what seems to be a more helpful place.
