I always feed my outside cats on the south side of my house, around the corner from the back door. I fed them about 9:00 p.m. I know there was no food left in the dish.
About midnight, I was trying to sleep. I heard something bump the food dish, and I thought nothing of it. Then my dog started barking and growling viciously. I thought maybe there was something out there. I turned on the outside lights. My dog was scrabbling so hard at the window that I thought she would break it. My fearless tomcat had his back arched and he was growling. I saw nothing, so I left the room to turn out the outside lights.
When I came back into the room, my dog let out a huge snort and stuck her head under the bed. The entire room stank of skunk. The damn thing sprayed the south side of the house. I suppose I could go hose it down at 2:30 in the morning, but the neighbors already think I am nuts. It might not do any good anyway.
I tried to go back to sleep, but the odor gave me a headache. All the cats have vacated the area. I think I will vacate it too, and sleep on the TV room couch. That room is on the north side.
Goodnight, everyone.

That completely sucks. Someone posted a few pics here recently of a skunk eating their cat food in their kitchen...I don't remember if that was you or not...I have never been shot by a skunk but I was camping once and was vigorously pursued by one. We figured it was a mother with babies nearby or something, she kept chasing us off the trail (hellish camping experience all around).

we used to have a skunk who came right up to the back door and ate with the cats, out of the same dish. The thing was so fat it waddled.
My kids and I used to stand at the back door and laugh at it. The cats never disputed its right to share their food. Smart cats.
