Who do you want to see nominated for an Oscar? |
|
My personal picks:
I hope that Scarlett Johansson (whether for lead or supporting), Sean Astin (for Return of the King), and Johnny Depp (for Pirates of the Caribbean) are nominated.

the younger of the two sisters in "In America". She's the most phenomenal actress of all time. She and here sister Sarah played real children with real children's emotions and behaviors, not the smarty-pants, wise-cracking faux children usually in movies and always on TV.
The scene where she cries and tells her dad he's not really her dad just broke my heart. The scene where the dad is trying to win a stuffed animal for her and she doesn't realize the parents are losing the rent and food money because of her innocent goodness and trust in her father also broke my heart.
If you haven't seen that movie yet go out right now and see it.
Oh, and sister Sarah also deserves a nomination.

6. Eugene Levy for Best Supporting Actor from "A Mighty Wind" |
|
He was just freaking hilarious in that movie and played the role of a schizo aging hippie folk singer to the hilt.
I'm tired of movies from Christopher Guest being overlooked at the Oscars. Fred Willard should have gotten a Best Supporting Nod in "Best of Show" and I truly believe Eugene Levy deserves one for "A Mighty Wind"

He was ripped off back in 1977, I haven't taken the Oscars seriously since.
And what was that documentary (Hoop Dreams?) that the Oscars ignored, not because the winner was a better movie, but because 'it had made enough money and we want someone else to have a chance'.
The Oscars are a joke.

11. Star Wars is massively overrated. |
|
Mediocre acting, mediocre story. If it had been filmed as a western (which it basically was) no one would be going ga-ga over it today. George Lucas has proved his worth as a director about 100 times since then ("Radioland Murders", anyone?)
Was "Star Wars" better than "Annie Hall"? No freakin' way.
I'm going to run away and hide in the corner now.... :scared:

and I don't even know if you're female/male, gay/straight. I have learned to detest Star Wars. I was in 7th grade when it came out, loved it, saw it three times...then the second one came out. Okay, but some complaints (Why does Yoda sound like Grover? The Millenium Falcon starts when you hit it? Darth is really who???) not the least of which was that it ended "To be continued" in an era when that meant YEARS (Sophomore in HS when I saw it, freshman summer of college when it "continued"). Then came the Ewoks, and I washed my hands of the Lucaverse completely.
Then all the hoopla of the re-releases, then those terrible "Episodes!" They are the most expensive high school productions I've ever seen. How do you make Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor boring? That takes some effort. Lucas is to films as Kid Rock is to CD's--they're no damn good, but he just can't quit makin' 'em!

I loved the Star Wars universe as a kid. It absolutely rocked my world. I think it was because these movies were so visually stunning, and I was just so caught up in the fun of the storyline. I seriously wanted to go into filmmaking just because of these films.
But a few years ago I saw the first movie again, and I was shocked to find out that I just didn't like it that much! The acting and the dialogue are just horrible! And to make matters worse, Lucas added a bunch of extraneous special effects (including Greedo shooting first) and other superfluous scenes and turned what was an average (though visually amazing) movie into total dog meat!
I can't believe I'm saying this, but that's how I feel. I'm just incredibly let down by George Lucas.

14. Hey, if he'd won back then... |
|
...I would insist it be taken back for those two hate crimes he purpatrated on the written word and filmed image called "Episodes 1 and 2."
Did the talent just bleed out of him somehow. Was there no transfusion available? I'm sure M. Night Shamalayan and Peter Jackson are the right blood type...

American Splendor gets best pic and adapted screenplay, Scarlet Johanson for best actress, Coppola is best director, best original screenplay, Renee Zelweger is best supporting actress (this is based on my absolute, unrelenting love for her and the fact that it shoulda been hers for Chicago--sigh, those back muscles!), Eugene Levy for best supporting actor.
A Mighty Wind number gets best song.

The image may have been computer generated, but it modelled after Serkis's performance. Those are his moves, and his words, and the Oscar should go to him.

One of our best character actors, he has been a bridesmaid now four times ("Pollock," "The Hours," "Apollo 13," and "The Truman Show") and he is WAY overdue for recognition.
(But I haven't seen anything he was in last year. I'm just biased.)

He was robbed for not winning for Gods and Monsters - he deserves a Supporting Actor nod for LOTR.
And I agree that Johnny Depp deserves a nomination for Pirates of the Caribbean, but I doubt he'll get one.
