Okay. Now I'm REALLY Pissed Off!
I just finished watching SiCKO and am beside myself with anger. As a Canadian, I realise that something as basic as health care is not a major issue for me and I admit that I take it for granted. Never again. After seeing what Americans must endure for even the most basic health services, I realise now more than ever how truly lucky I am.

The profits that your HMO's rake in every year while denying basic services to INSURED people are obscene. I don't think that there's anything fundamentally wrong with profit, but when it comes at the expense of society's most vulnerable it becomes unforgivable. I honestly cannot see how you tolerate it. Do some Americans (conservatives?) really believe that a serious illness is justification for financial ruin?

I'm not trying to bash America and it's citizens. I believe you have a great country with wonderful people. I just can't get my mind wrapped around the prevailing attitudes towards something as basic as good health. It is a basic human right and not a privilege for only those who can afford it.

Needless to say, Michael Moore has hit another home run with SiCKO. His best work yet.

BTW.......You're gonna need hankies for the last 30 minutes of this film. Be warned.

1. We're 'Murkins. We love to get screwed in the ass.
As the bumper sticker says: "Of course it hurts! You're getting screwed by an elephant!"

2. Many of us here at DU are at risk of losing everything
because of medical bills. My monthly co-pays are now one of my largest expenses. x(

I wish more people were upset enough to demand changes. But even if they were, our government is now so mired in corporate influence, and so insulated from citizens, that it's unlikely to make a difference. Those of us who have health problems are going to be sacrificed so that insurance companies can continue to bloat.

3. Sicko pissed me off too,
but as one of the 50 million Americans without health insurance of any kind, it didn't really apply to me.

The movie did, however, make me want to marry a Canadian.

Don't Get Sick.™

In your policy... in your policy... here we are. It states quite clearly that
no claim you make will be paid.

Yeah, I know this isn't the proper photo for that line, but I couldn't find one with the Rev. Morrison. :eyes:

6. conservatives also believe that a serious illness is justification for
death, if that's what comes.

After all, as Howard Dean put it, they believe that if you're wealthy it's because you deserve it, and if you're poor it's because you deserve that too.

I for one appreciate your comments (and criticism). For the most part Americans want universal healthcare, or something better than we've got right now, but I'm not quite sure most Americans (even the ones who do) would quite come to the point of saying healthcare is a basic human right, but I definitely agree with you wholeheartedly.

I think that's especially true when our own government is NOT protecting us against all the pollution, unclean air and water and soil and food, which has to at least contribute to our ill health no matter what is the cause individually. (Just another example, btw, of the profits getting privatized for corporations while the costs get socialized.)
