IN line, or ON line? What do they say in your region? |
|
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 01:57 PM by amitten
In the midwest, I only ever hear "in line". Out east, I always hear "on line".
I think "in" line makes more sense...it's not like you're standing on top of the line...
Edit: This refers to standing in a line waiting for something. I even recently heard on a Seinfeld episode Elaine asking someone standing in line if they are "on" line.

1. As in, standing in one? |
|
If you're in a queue, waiting in a store or something, it's always "in line." The only times I've ever heard "on line" would be in an office ("I have James on line 4 for you") or in reference to the internet.

If I'm at the store I'm in line. If I'm on the internets I'm on line :hi:

If I'm reading DU, I'm "on-line". If I'm waiting to buy an Iphone, I'm "in-line".

4. "In line" around here. I had never heard anyone refer to it as "on line" |
|
until the 2004 election fiasco in Ohio, when Randi Rhodes was talking about the long, long lines in minority areas, and she kept talking about how long people were "on line".

6. Right. She's a native New Yorker, isn't she? |
|
In New York all the time people would ask, "Are you on line?" (meaning, are you in the line or just standing around).

10. IN line...Sorry, New Yorkers. I love ya, but I HATE "on line." |
|
That always bothered me. And now, especially, online means on The Internets, not waiting for a movie.
