Anyone notice who's the hottest club in baseball?
The Chicago Cubs.

The. Chicago. Cubs.

The Chicago fucking Cubs.

Who woulda thunk it?

:wow:

2. Mike Greenberg of ESPN ran into Piniella last week...
Greenie said that Piniella looked relaxed and said that he'd finally figured out what kind of team he has. Lou figures them for a big run in the playoffs.

Good for the Cubs. Even my Cardinals fan self wants the Cubs to win eventually. Everyone deserves to see their team win once.

3. Yeah, I know
Even if they beat the Dodgers to do it, I'd be shit-howdy-happy if the Cubs got into the Series — mostly for their long-suffering fans, but they've always been like my no. 2 or 3 ball club.

Sudden thought: The timing of Barrett's departure — coincidence? Could that be part of what Piniella meant?

5. I think Barrett lost the pitching staff.
Notice how good Zambrano's been since Barrett left?

8. I haven't been watching that closely
But if a pitching staff loses confidence in its no. 1 catcher, that's baaaaaad news. And it seems like that might've been what happened, yeah.

9. Well he had the fight with Zambrano and I think he had a conflict with Hill.
That's 40% of the starters and those guys TALK. He really had to go.

And I only follow things through "Baseball Tonight". :)

11. I love the Cubbies
They have always had to take a back seat to the Dodgers, but I have long had a soft spot for them. I saw them play the Dodgers in Wrigley Field back in 1983, and fell in love with the place, and then there's the whole underdog mythos which I fully buy.

I enjoyed Piniella's tenure with the Mariners immensely. He HATES to lose. I knew he would go nowhere with Tampa Bay (but who could?), but knew he would make a difference in Chicago.

Who knows? Next year is the 100th anniversary of the last World Series win for the Cubs, and maybe Sweet Lou can be the one to lead them to their next Series win.

(Side trivia note: He managed the Mariners to 116 wins in 2001, tying the 1906 Cubs record for all-time season wins)

...let's all sing.

"The Northside die hards stole the show
The land of Wrigley is in my soul
Come on Cubbies let the good times roll
Roll all night long"

or

http://youtube.com/watch?v=6dQPiCi38po

"Baseball season's underway
Well you better get ready for a brand new day.

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

They're singing ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

They got the power, they got the speed
To be the best in the National League
Well this is the year and Cubs are real
So come on down to Wrigley Field

We're singing now ...

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Baseball time is here again
You can catch it all on WGN
So stamp you feet and clap your hands
Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans.

You're singing now ...

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today."

Ya know Steve is watching....

Cheers

13. um, go Cubs, but they're playing .500, 6.5 games back in their division and 6 back in the wild card
Edited on Sat Jun-30-07 12:14 AM by Bombtrack
Red Sox fans have a brotherhood with the Cubs fans and as one of the former I wish you luck but we're the only team with a double digit lead in their division.

14. And now for some Steve Goodman
By the shores of old Lake Michigan
Where the "hawk wind" blows so cold
An old Cub fan lay dying
In his midnight hour that tolled
'Round his bed, his friends had all gathered
They knew his time was short
And on his head they put this bright blue cap
From his all-time favorite sport
He told them, "It's late and it's getting dark in here"
And I know it's time to go
But before I leave the line-up
Boys, there's just one thing I'd like to know

Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League

Told his friends "You know the law of averages says:
Anything will happen that can"
That's what it says
"But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennant
Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan"
The Cubs made me a criminal
Sent me down a wayward path
They stole my youth from me
(that's the truth)
I'd forsake my teachers
To go sit in the bleachers
In flagrant truancy

And then one thing led to another
and soon I'd discovered alcohol, gambling, dope
football, hockey, lacrosse, tennis
But what do you expect,
When you raise up a young boy's hopes
And then just crush 'em like so many paper beer cups.

Year after year after year
after year, after year, after year, after year, after year
'Til those hopes are just so much popcorn
for the pigeons beneath the 'L' tracks to eat
He said, "You know I'll never see Wrigley Field, anymore before my eternal rest
So if you have your pencils and your score cards ready,
and I'll read you my last request
He said, "Give me a double header funeral in Wrigley Field
On some sunny weekend day (no lights)
Have the organ play the "National Anthem"
and then a little 'na, na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye'
Make six bullpen pitchers, carry my coffin
and six ground keepers clear my path
Have the umpires bark me out at every base
In all their holy wrath
Its a beautiful day for a funeral, Hey Ernie lets play two!
Somebody go get Jack Brickhouse to come back,
and conduct just one more interview
Have the Cubbies run right out into the middle of the field,
Have Keith Moreland drop a routine fly
Give everybody two bags of peanuts and a frosty malt
And I'll be ready to die

Build a big fire on home plate out of your Louisville Sluggers baseball bats,
And toss my coffin in
Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow
From the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind
When my last remains go flying over the left-field wall
Will bid the bleacher bums ad?eu
And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue

The dying man's friends told him to cut it out
They said stop it that's an awful shame
He whispered, "Don't Cry, we'll meet by and by near the Heavenly Hall of Fame
He said, "I've got season's tickets to watch the Angels now,
So its just what I'm going to do
He said, "but you the living, you're stuck here with the Cubs,
So its me that feels sorry for you!"

And he said, "Ahh Play, play that lonesome losers tune,
That's the one I like the best"
And he closed his eyes, and slipped away
What we got is the Dying Cub Fan's Last Request
And here it is

Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League
